That was the biggest concession Irvin had made. Like Hendrix, they were both proud people who needed each other's help, but would not give up their dignity.
For Shirley, he really gave it his all. As friends of both of them, or as compensation for what I owed Irvin, there was no reason for me to stand by and watch without lending a hand.
Seeing that Hendrix showed no signs of changing his mind, I was angry and anxious. I nudged him and said, "Take it as a favour for me, alright? GW Group is still desperate to work with the Roberts Group, so they won't refuse your request, as long as..."
Before I could finish my words, Hendrix roared back, "So you want yourself and Anne to end up like what happened to Shirley?!"
I looked at the angry veins on Hendrix's forehead, and my mind went blank for a moment.
What did Hendrix mean? Did he already know that Shirley and Dannie were missing? Or had he already made up his mind that as long as we could stay safe, he wouldn't interfere with other people's problems, even if it meant life or death
forthem?
At that moment, I suddenly found Hendrix unfamiliar.
Hendrix might have seen through my thoughts, so he turned his face away with an indifferent expression. He lightly opened his thin lips and ordered Irvin to leave. "You can leave now. Arianna's pregnant, she can't go anywhere else. Nothing must go wrong."
I said, "Hend..."
I wanted to help Irvin to persuade Hendrix, but he suddenly stood up and strode upstairs without looking back, leaving no chance for me to speak at all.
"Still angry?" Hendrix broke the silence.
I lowered my head and shook my head slowly, saying, "No."
Even if I was angry, I could only be mad at myself. It had been ten years since I was under Hendrix and Irvin's care, but I did not progress at all. Instead, I was still in the same spot.
"Irvin came to me before," Hendrix suddenly said to himself. He continued, "Before I went abroad, I promised that I would send people to search for them. The condition was that he couldn't tell you about it, but he still broke into our house and stayed with you for such a long time. Even the bodyguards kept it from me. If anything happened to you during this period of time, and the bodyguards wouldn't tell me because they're afraid of being punished, what would happen? Do you know how serious the consequences would be for us?"
Toward the end of his sentence, he was somewhat resentful, but he was facing me, so he endured it.
