“I accepted it,” she said quickly. “I’m ready to get married. I won’t fight it anymore. Just… please don’t ruin John.”

His eyes darkened instantly.

“He’s just my friend,” she rushed on, fear slipping into her voice. “Nothing more. Please.”

The change in him was immediate.

His handsome face hardened, every line sharp and cold. The warmth she had glimpsed earlier vanished, replaced by something stern and unreadable.

He didn’t like this. Not at all.

“Stop it,” he said into the phone. “Get back. Return everything.”

Then he ended the call and tossed the phone onto the bed. It bounced once and landed near her hand.

He leaned down again, his face close to hers, and pressed a brief kiss to her lips.
