“What the hell did you just do?” she shouted, horror spreading through her body.
Jabco looked at her with a cold, challenging gaze. “Now let’s see how you’ll marry a man who has nothing.”
He started the car.
“Have you lost your mind?” Riyana screamed. Her hands shook violently. “Are you insane?”
“Yes,” he replied without hesitation. “I lost my mind. I gave you a chance. You made your choice.”
There was no guilt on his face. Not even a flicker.
Riyana felt her vision blur. Her fingers trembled uncontrollably, her nails digging into her palm. For a moment, she couldn’t even think.
This was her fault. John had done nothing wrong. She couldn’t destroy someone’s life because of her lie.
“Alright,” she said suddenly.
Jabco glanced at her.
She closed her eyes, swallowing her pride. “There is no one. I mean… there is no man. John is just my friend. There’s nothing between us.” Her voice cracked. “I lied to you.”
She opened her eyes and looked at him. “I can’t let you hurt him because of me.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Jabco said softly.
That calm tone scared her more than his anger.
“Then what do you want from me?” she shouted, panic creeping into her voice.
She looked outside the window and realized they weren’t heading toward her apartment. This was the road to his house. But right now, that wasn’t even the biggest problem. The real problem was stopping him.
“Say yes to marriage,” Jabco said casually, as if he were asking her to schedule a meeting.
Riyana went silent.
She stared at him for a long time, as if she were seeing him for the first time. The man she had worked for. The man she thought she understood.
Her throat felt dry. Her heart felt heavy.
Marriage.
Not love. Not choice.
A demand.
“There is no way,” Riyana said firmly. “I won’t.”
Her voice wasn’t loud, but it didn’t shake either. It came from somewhere deep, a place she didn’t even know she still had strength in.
She turned her face toward him, her eyes burning. “Mr. Grey, stop this. You can threaten, you can pressure me, but I will not marry you.”
Jabco tightened his grip on the steering wheel. His jaw clenched so hard the muscles twitched.
“You think you have a choice?” he asked, his voice low.
“Yes,” she replied immediately. “I do. And I’m choosing myself.”
Her chest rose and fell as she took a sharp breath. “You’re using power, fear, and control to force something that should never be forced. That’s not marriage. That’s a cage.”
The car was silent except for the sound of the engine and her uneven breathing.
“I worked for you,” she continued, her words pouring out now. “I respected you. I admired you. But I never agreed to be owned by you. I never agreed to be cornered like this.”
Jabco turned to her slowly. His eyes were dark, unreadable.
“You said you didn’t want to grow old alone,” he said.
“Yes,” Riyana answered. “But I also said I wanted love. Peace. Safety.” She laughed bitterly. “Look at me right now. Do I look safe to you?”
Her gaze dropped to his hand, still resting near the gear, then back to his face.
“If you destroy John, if you use your power like this,” she said quietly, “then whatever I once felt for you will turn into hatred. And I will never forgive you.”
That hit him.
She could see it. Just for a second, something flickered across his face.
“I won’t say yes,” she repeated, slower this time, each word clear. “Not now. Not ever. So stop the car… and let me go.”
“Then hate me as much as you want. I don’t care.”
His words landed like a slap.
Before Riyana could even react, Jabco slammed the brakes. The car stopped with a sharp jolt, throwing her slightly forward. Her heart jumped into her throat.
She turned to him, stunned.
“…What?” The word barely came out.
But Jabco didn’t look at her. Not even once.
He unlocked his door, stepped out of the car, and slammed it shut. The sound echoed in the quiet space like a final decision being sealed.
Riyana sat there, frozen.
