My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 295

David opened the car door for Lily and helped her inside, carefully making sure she was seated properly. Once she was settled, he closed the door and walked around to the driver’s side. As soon as he sat down and started the engine, Lily slowly blinked and turned her face toward him.

Her vision was still blurry from the alcohol, but she could clearly sense the coldness coming from him. It wasn’t loud or obvious. It was quiet, heavy, sitting between them.

“What’s wrong?” she asked softly, shifting a little in her seat.

David kept his eyes on the road as the car moved forward. His voice was low and controlled.

“What do you mean?”

Lily studied his profile for a moment, then looked away.

“Nothing,” she murmured. “I’m sleepy.”

She leaned back and closed her eyes, choosing not to push further.

David didn’t ask anything either. His hands tightened around the steering wheel, his lips pressed into a thin line, but he stayed silent.

He just kept driving, the streetlights flashing past his eyes one by one.

When they finally arrived home, Lily was sleeping deeply. David didn’t wake her. He carefully unbuckled her seatbelt and lifted her into his arms. She was light, warm, familiar. He carried her into the building and stepped into the elevator.

Inside, the mirrored wall reflected them back at him. He stood there holding her, her head resting against his shoulder, her arms loosely around his neck. Anyone looking would think they were a perfect couple. But his chest felt tight, uncomfortable, as if something was squeezing his heart.

Without realizing it, his hold on her tightened slightly.

When they reached the room, he gently laid her down on the bed. He changed his own clothes first, moving quietly. Then he returned to her. He took off her shoes, carefully removed her clothes, wiped her body with a warm towel, and dressed her in her nightwear.

Finally, he pulled the blanket over her, making sure she was comfortable.

“I’ll check on our son,” he whispered, placing a soft kiss on her forehead before walking out of the room.

The door closed with a quiet click.

Lily slowly opened her eyes.

She had woken up the moment he carried her in his arms, but she pretended to sleep the entire time. Watching him now, listening to the fading sound of his footsteps, something twisted painfully in her chest.

Everything he had just done for her… she used to do the same for him.

Her mind drifted back to those nights in the past. Nights when he came home drunk, leaning against her, calling Marina’s name again and again. Even then, she had taken care of him without complaint.

She raised her hand and stared at the ring on her finger.

Since the day he put this ring on her, the anger she once felt toward him had faded. Not disappeared, but softened. What remained was confusion. She didn’t know how to accept this change. She didn’t know how to face the feelings growing quietly inside her.

But one thing was clear.

She didn’t want him to leave her again.

Even if she still hated him.

The door opened softly, and David walked back into the room. Lily closed her eyes again and pretended to be asleep.

David lay down beside her and gently pulled her into his arms, holding her close as if afraid she might disappear.

“Lily,” he whispered her name with so much tenderness that it could melt even the hardest heart.
