Lily’s palms started sweating. Every time she turned her head, the headlights of that car glowed in her eyes. “Drive faster, Noah, please.”
Noah nodded, pressing the accelerator even harder. The car jolted forward. They passed through another junction, then took another turn. Noah tried to keep her calm, but her hands were shaking slightly.
“Are they still behind us?” she asked.
Lily turned around. “Yes,” she said. “They’re not leaving.”
Noah bit her lip. “Hold tight.”
She suddenly turned the wheel hard, taking an unexpected route a smaller road leading away from the main street. The tires screeched slightly, and Lily had to grab onto the side handle to steady herself.
The car behind them followed again.
Lily’s heart sank. “Noah, they’re not giving up.”
“Son of a....” Noah muttered. “Okay, we’ll see how long they can keep up.”
She pressed the pedal down again, the car speeding faster than before. The wind rushed through the small opening in the window, Lily’s hair flying slightly. Her heart was racing not just from fear but from anger too. Who dared to follow them like this?
As they turned another corner, Noah thought they finally managed to shake them off. She looked in the rearview mirror, and for a moment there was nothing.
“They’re gone,” she said, letting out a heavy breath. “Thank god.”
Lily leaned back, closing her eyes for a second. “That was crazy…”
“Yeah,” Noah said, trying to calm her racing heart. “Maybe it was just a coincidence. Could’ve been someone else who happened to take the same route.”
Lily opened her eyes and looked out again. She didn’t fully believe that. Her instincts told her otherwise. She’d learned long ago not to ignore her gut feelings.
“Still,” she said quietly, “be careful on the way back.”
“I will,” Noah replied, forcing a smile. “Now let’s get something to eat. I need food after this madness.”
Lily nodded, trying to ease her own tension. But before either of them could say more, the road ahead suddenly seemed to flash bright.
A loud horn blared from the opposite side.
Lily’s eyes widened as she saw a truck speeding straight toward them. “Noah!” she screamed.
