“Dinner date, huh?”
David’s voice came low and cold, slicing through the quiet morning air.
Lily stiffened but didn’t look at him right away. She adjusted the strap of her bag and said calmly, “That's none of your business”
He took a slow step closer, eyes dark, jaw tight. “Seems like you’re keep giving me surprises now. I didn’t know you and Mr. Grey were this close.”
Lily met his gaze, unfazed. “yes, we are, so?and it’s his birthday. I was just being polite.”
“Polite?” David scoffed, his lips twisting. “You call that polite? Sounded more like flirting to me.”
Her brows pulled together. “ Yes, I was so what? What’s your problem, David? why does it matter what I do?”
David clenched his fists at his sides. “Because…” he stopped, unable to finish the sentence. His voice cracked with something he didn’t want to name. “Because I don’t like hearing you talk to other men like that.”
Lily laughed quietly, bitterly. “You don’t like it? and how is my problem? You don’t even respect me, David. You come and go as you please, and now you want to act jealous?”
He took another step closer, eyes burning with frustration. “I’m not jealous.”
Jealous of her and Jabco? David feels like laughing. what a nonsense.
“Then stop acting like it!” she snapped. “You can’t walk in and out of my life whenever you feel lonely. I’m not here to fill your emptiness, David.”
For a moment, silence hung between them thick, heavy, full of things unsaid.
David’s gaze softened for a heartbeat, almost regretful. “I didn’t mean to make you angry. I just…” he exhaled roughly. “I just didn’t like it, okay?”
"That's not my problem, what you like or not"
Lily looked away, her chest tight. “You shouldn’t care. Because I don’t anymore.”
“Get in. I’ll drop you at the company,” David said flatly changing the attitude, his tone calm but firm, leaving no room for argument.
Lily shot him a sideways glance, her brows knitting together. “You don’t have to bother this much. I can go by myself,” she said, stepping away from him. Her voice was even, but her eyes were cold, tired, like she’d already fought too many of these same battles.
But before she could walk away, David reached out and caught her wrist.
Lily froze.
She looked down at his hand gripping her and then up at his face. Her voice hardened. “Leave me.”
She tried to pull her hand free, but David didn’t let go. His grip only tightened, pulling her closer until she stumbled and crashed into his chest.
Her palms landed flat against him, and she could feel his heartbeat , strong, fast, uneven. For a second, everything went silent. Her breath caught in her throat, and she could almost hear her own heart racing.
