After Naomi left, the atmosphere in the family room still felt unusual. Even though no one had spoken yet, everyone was occupied with thoughts about Cale’s crazy idea. The problem was that none of them had a better solution than the one Cale had proposed. Not for the current situation.
Chris set down the coffee cup he had been holding and stared at his brother for a long moment. Then he let out a long sigh. “Cale, we need to talk in private. Now.”
Cale did not immediately agree to his younger brother’s request. He looked at Chris for quite some time before finally giving a small nod. He accepted the request without saying a single word. Lydia briefly glanced at her husband before Cale left. He responded with a slight nod, as if to say that everything was fine.
But Lydia knew better.
Usually, when Chris went so far as to ask for a private conversation like this, it meant there was something they needed to settle in their own way.
“Is it really okay to let the two of them talk alone?” Riana asked worriedly.
Nathan gently took his wife’s hand. “Don’t worry. I’m sure there are some things they need to discuss privately. Let’s just wait and see the outcome.”
What the middle-aged man said was true. Even so, it did little to ease Riana’s concern. Chris rarely asked for a private conversation, especially with Cale.
“Daddy’s right, Mom,” Althea spoke up this time. “Let them sort it out themselves.”
Althea’s words offered Riana a measure of comfort.
“I should go with them,” Daven decided, causing everyone left in the family room to turn toward him.
They looked at him with confusion and curiosity, but Daven simply continued, “Just to make sure they don’t do anything strange.”
Althea clicked her tongue. “Do you think they’re little kids?”
Daven shrugged.
“I agree with you, Daven. You should keep an eye on them. Ever since what happened at Carrington Bay, Cale’s emotions have been a little unstable,” Lydia complained.
Daven smiled faintly. “Of course.” He pressed a brief kiss to the top of Althea’s head. “There’s nothing for you all to worry about. You should go check on the kids instead. I suspect Josh and Grace are already at each other’s throats, fighting for Eli’s attention... or Naomi’s.”
Althea chuckled. “Okay.”
