Chapter 765
Cale let out a short laugh devoid of humor. “Worse than I imagined.”
Lydia loosened her arms slightly just so she could look at his face. “Do I know any of them?”
Cale chuckled under his breath. “No. But there were a few old men you met earlier at the banquet. And as you know, old people talk too much.”
His tone sounded casual, but Lydia knew he was forcing himself to stay calm, holding his emotions back from exploding again tonight.
“You haven’t eaten, have you?” Lydia asked quietly.
“I’m not hungry.”
“Are you sure?” Lydia gave a faint smile as she took his hand and gently led him toward the table in the middle of the room, where the dinner they were supposed to share hours ago still sat untouched.
At last, Cale looked at the small table filled with the dinner dishes. “You waited for me?”
“If not, then who else would all this be for?”
Something in Cale’s gaze softened instantly.
Lydia had always been like this.
In the middle of the dark underworld, surrounded by threats, pressure from every direction, and blood staining his hands simply to survive, she still somehow managed to create something that felt like home.
“Come on, eat a little,” Lydia coaxed gently. “At least have the soup.” She motioned for Cale to sit beside her. “Should I heat it up again?”
“No need,” Cale replied. He let out a quiet breath before finally giving a small nod. “All right. Let’s eat together.”
They sat side by side on the sofa. Lydia poured the warm soup into a small bowl while Cale leaned back wearily, rubbing his temple with his uninjured hand.
“How’s Naomi?” he suddenly asked.
“She’s a little calmer now.”
Cale said nothing.
Lydia glanced at him briefly. “She must be in shock, Cale. That girl was almost kidnapped in front of so many people.”
Cale’s jaw tightened immediately. “I was late.”
“You arrived in time.”

“Almost too late.” His gaze darkened again, emotion returning to his eyes. “If I’d been a few minutes later, they would’ve taken her.”
Lydia fell silent.
She knew that guilt would haunt Cale for a while. He had always been like this with the people under his
protection.
“I should’ve tightened security from the start,” Cale muttered in a low voice. “I knew Falcon wouldn’t stay quiet.”
“You can’t control everything.”
“I should be able to,” Cale shot back immediately. His voice sounded too cold, too harsh on himself.
Lydia finally set the bowl of soup down on the table before moving closer again. Gently, she cupped Cale’s face in her hands. “You’re not God.”
Their eyes met for several long seconds.
For the first time that night, some of the tension in Cale’s gaze finally eased.
Lydia gave him a faint smile before wrapping her arms around him once more, slowly and carefully.” Naomi is still here. She’s safe, she’s not hurt, and there’s nothing to worry about right now. That’s what
matters.”
Cale closed his eyes briefly.
What Lydia said was true. But the anger inside him wasn’t something that could disappear so easily. He had already made up his mind to retaliate against whoever had dared to do this to him.
His arms slowly tightened around Lydia’s waist, as though he genuinely needed the calm only she could
give him.
“And I hated that damn meeting,” he muttered quietly.
Lydia let out a small laugh. “I could already guess that.”
“Everyone started talking like they knew exactly what I should do.” Cale’s gaze turned cold again. “Not a single one of them was standing in that hallway.”
Lydia gently ran her fingers through his hair. “Let them talk tonight.”
“I hate being controlled. Especially being looked down on.”
“I know.”
“There were too many people I can’t stand showing up and saying things way out of line,” Cale complained.
Lydia let him vent everything weighing on his mind. Even though there were moments when she didn’t

fully understand what he meant, because she still couldn’t completely grasp the kind of world Cale lived in, she still tried her best to respond to him.
“For some reason, I feel like they’ve been waiting for the right moment,” Cale continued. “The second you make a mistake, that’s when they corner you like this.”
Cale was just about to say something else when the sound of knocking came from the bedroom door.
Knock. Knock.
Cale frowned slightly, clearly irritated at being disturbed this late at night.
“Come in.”
The door slowly opened, and Daniel stepped inside with his head slightly lowered. “Sorry to disturb you,
Mr. Cale.”
“What is it?”
Daniel briefly glanced at Lydia before speaking again. “There’s a guest here asking to see you and Mrs.
Lydia.”
Cale’s brows immediately furrowed. “A guest?”
“He arrived a few minutes ago.”
Cale looked even more confused. “Who comes here this late at night?”
Before Daniel could answer, Lydia slowly set her soup bowl down. “I didn’t get the chance to tell you earlier,” she said carefully.
