“Do you think Lionel is acting this way because he’s already figured out a counter-strategy or has a backup plan? Maybe he’s already found someone to create new evidence that points to us, which is why he’s so arrogant?”
Mrs. Mary Rosenberg suddenly considered this, and a wave of unease washed over her.
“If that’s what he’s doing, we need to tell the elders right away. Otherwise, when they investigate and find the evidence Lionel fabricated, they’ll start suspecting us, and that would be terrible.”
The more Mrs. Mary Rosenberg thought about his confident and defiant expression, the more worried she became.
“Quennel, I’m telling you, his arrogance must mean he's up to something.”
“Alright, Mom, don't overthink it. Maybe he really didn't do it.”
As soon as Quennel finished speaking, Mrs. Mary Rosenberg slapped his shoulder in frustration.
“It’s obvious he did it! Why are you defending him now?”
After she said that, something clicked in her mind, and she looked at Quennel with a horrified expression.
Her face froze for a second before she asked nervously, “Quennel, tell me… it wasn't you who did this, was it?”
“Do you… do you have any idea what the consequences are for something like this? Tell me right now, was it you? If it was, I’ll go to the elders this instant and tell them I did it. I’ll take all the blame for you, so they won't punish you.”
Seeing his calm and composed demeanor, Mrs. Mary Rosenberg's heart began to race.
If Quennel really was behind this, their earlier conversation had thoroughly angered the elders. If they investigated and found out, the punishment would be even more severe.
