My Deceased Wife Wants a Divorce (Hannah) novel Chapter 226

Hannah knew with absolute certainty that whenever Sandra was involved, Lionel’s promises meant nothing. This wasn’t the first time; it had happened more times than she could count.

She lowered her gaze, a wave of despair washing over her. She hated herself for being so young and naive, for enduring one humiliation after another, always believing things would change, that there would be a breakthrough.

Quennel saw the redness in her eyes and sighed. “Maybe this time will be different. Perhaps a night of reflection has helped Lionel see things clearly.”

Hannah stared at him for a moment, then let out a hollow laugh.

“Quennel, I know you’re trying to comfort me, but I know exactly who Lionel is. It’s not possible. It’s absolutely impossible.”

If one night could change him, he would have changed long ago. He wouldn’t have waited until now. Sometimes, she wished she didn’t know him so well. Maybe then she could hold on to a sliver of hope.

But because she knew him inside and out, all hope was gone.

“Nothing is ever absolute. Let’s just wait and see. You’re resting at home today anyway.”

Seeing Quennel’s earnest persistence, Hannah didn’t have the heart to argue. She nodded and picked up her fork, but her mind was in turmoil. She hadn’t been expecting anything, so she hadn’t felt a thing. But now, because of Quennel’s words, a tiny, treacherous seed of hope began to sprout.

After hanging up, Lionel stared at the empty hospital room, his breathing growing ragged. If he had known Sandra wasn’t going to wake up last night, he wouldn’t have wasted the entire night suffering. He could have just gone to Hannah and explained everything.

He hesitated, then started walking toward the elevator, only to stop after a few steps.
