“Oh my Moon Goddess-that disgusting maggot How dare she use a holy contract with such a filthy soul?!”
Nita screamed inside Laila’s mind. The fury of a hunt stopped midway and nearly tore their shared spirit apart.
Laila didn’t answer. She just stared at the crescent mark in silence. After a long time, she slowly closed her eyes.
When she opened them again, her golden eyes had turned cold and deep.
She knew the hardest prey wasn’t always the strongest.
It was the one willing to pay any price, the one crazy enough to risk everything, and the one protected by rules no one dared break. Even the most ruthless werewolves rarely stepped into the Stillmoon Sanctum to give up everything just to gain the Moon Goddess Sacrificial Mark.
That contract cost far more than just a soul.
On every full moon, when the light burned brightest, the mark would flare up and burn, like melted silver running through veins.
That pain was the Moon Goddess’s way of testing and judging the one who made the sacrifice. Only those who could survive unbearable agony without losing their minds were allowed to keep that dark protection.
The pain burst out from the mark and spread through the whole body. It felt like thousands of icy needles stabbing deep into the bones, like invisible claws ripping someone apart from the inside. Under the full moon, the sacrificer would shake and twitch, unable to faint, forced to feel every second of it to prove their will was strong enough.
It wasn’t just physical suffering. It slowly tore apart the soul as well.
Many who couldn’t take it went insane by the third or fourth full moon. Some even killed themselves. And once they did, the contract made sure their souls vanished into nothing forever. Even their wolf spirits would scatter and never return.
Maris actually chose this path.
“She’s going to regret it!” Nita shouted inside their shared mind.

Laila stared at Maris with icy eyes. “You know the Moon Goddess’s protection only lasts five years.”
Her tone was calm, but the surrounding air felt colder.
Maris paused and didn’t fully turn around.
Moonlight brushed across her pale cheek, and her lips curved strangely.
“Five years is plenty of time for me. When it’s over, I’ll find another way. The Moon Goddess’s blessing isn’t limited to just one thing
“You won’t get that chance.”
Laila’s reply was short and sharp.
Maris finally faced her, her eyes burning almost wildly. “Then watch me, Laila. Let’s see if you break the rules first, or if I destroy everything you care about.”
She pulled her robe tightly, hiding the bright crescent mark like some twisted medal.
Then she turned and walked farther into camp, like someone who believed she had already
won.
“Laila…”
Samuel stepped up beside her, speaking softly, as if unsure what to say.
Laila lifted her head. The storm in her golden eyes had mostly faded. She even managed a faint smile. “I’m fine, Your Highness. Five years? She’ll be lucky to last six months.”
Viola and the others rushed over, talking all at once. “Exactly! That mark only keeps her from being killed. It doesn’t mean we can’t beat her. Her caning should happen now!”
Manu cracked his knuckles and flashed his teeth “Leave it to me, Laila. I’ll pick the toughest white-waxwood stick and make sure she never forgets it.”
Their loud jokes and anger eased some of the fire burning in Laila’s chest.
Then Holt walked over.
“Laila, tomorrow is the full moon. Can we delay Maris’s punishment? I’m afraid she won’t be able to survive it…”
