At the mention of Laila’s name, Vaughn’s frown deepened.

Morgana froze, too. She’d come to beg Vaughn to stop Laila from marrying Samuel-and now she’d walked right into Estelle storming in with a complaint.
Seeing the storm on Estelle’s face, Morgana couldn’t help wondering what Laila had done this time to enrage the old she-wolf so badly.
Vaughn spoke. “What about Laila? Why should I order her punished?”
Estelle snarled, “She broke into my den and insulted and threatened me in front of my own guards-it’s an open provocation against the royal family!”
“Is that so?” Vaughn tilted his head, no great storm behind his eyes. “Laila isn’t the type to start trouble for no reason.
“Besides, she broke in? Then, where were your guards? The finest warriors of Frostfang Pack couldn’t stop one young she-wolf? As for insults and threats-what exactly did she say? By all means, tell me.”
Estelle’s face went iron-gray.
Repeating her exact words wasn’t an option.
She pressed her hand to her chest, her voice shaking with barely contained thunder. “I let the scene at my birthday banquet go-she’s young, I showed mercy. And today? She storms into the Moon Pavilion, points at my face and hurls abuse, and vows she won’t let me off!”
“Vows she won’t let you off?” Morgana couldn’t help herself, her voice slipping in, light and quick. “Does she mean ‘I’ll impeach you before the council’ kind of won’t-let-off, or…
She didn’t finish-Estelle’s glare cut her dead.
But Vaughn quietly shifted his sister behind him.
”
“I still don’t understand. Why did she break into your den? Surely it wasn’t because the moon- honey tea wasn’t brewed strong enough this morning?”
He paused, then changed the subject entirely.

“That ‘gift’ people are talking about-the pair of broken fangs in silver chains. Was that real or not?”
He rose to his feet, his frame casting Estelle into shadow.
“After General Conlay died at Vagen-did you or did you not send that thing to Silvermoon Pack?”
His voice wasn’t loud, but the air in the room seemed to freeze for a beat.
“If you didn’t—then yes, she was out of line, and I’ll personally tie her up and march her to your gate to apologize. But if you did-
“Then, what
you suffered today, you brought on yourself.
“Not only will I not punish Laila-I’ll make you go apologize to her.”
“Vaughn, you-!”
Estelle let out a cold laugh, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
“Oh, I forgot-you were Kain’s student. I can’t believe I actually expected you to be impartial. How stupid of me.”
She took a deep breath and smoothed her cuffs. “But regardless of whether that object is real or fabricated, it has nothing to do with her breaking in and hurling abuse today. And besides, it was a baseless slander she invented to attack me.”
The thing was already shattered.
If she denied it, who could
prove
otherwise?
Vaughn didn’t reply immediately.
He lowered his gaze, as if studying the howling wolf engraved on his thumb ring.
After a long silence, he pressed his palm down gently.
“Estelle. Let’s all take a breath.”
His tone smoothed out, as if the flash of pressure a moment ago had been nothing but an illusion.

“She trespassed in your den-that was wrong. But you say she hurled insults-what insults, exactly? Do you have witnesses?”
He paused.
“As for her accusation about the gift, I’ll have the Royal Court’s council investigate. If it’s proven to be a fabrication, I’ll charge her for that as well.”
“Witnesses?” Estelle’s voice pitched sharper. “Every guard in Frostfang Pack is a witness! She vaulted off their backs to get in-they couldn’t even stop her! As for the insults, the maids in my chamber heard every word!”
She stopped, her tone suddenly pulling tight. “As for that object, don’t bother the council. Making a spectacle of it only convinces the ignorant masses that it’s real. Even if I’m exonerated, the damage is done. The court of public opinion doesn’t care about the truth- once you’ve been dragged through the mud, you’re never truly clean.”
Vaughn met her stare.
“I’m the king of the Rydar Kingdom. I must be fair. So, here’s what we’ll do.
“Summon your guards. I’ll summon Laila. You will face each other and settle this in the open. If she did insult you, I will punish her in front of you.”
He paused.
“Otherwise, if I convict on your word alone-Mr. Kain’s wolf spirit, if it still roams, would probably ask me if I’ve lost my way. He’d want to know if his star pupil has forgotten what it means to play it straight when it comes to loyalty and justice!”
