Chapter 141 Stay Away from Him, I’m Begging You

Laila’s POV:

“What’s going on inside that head of yours?”

I practically hissed the words through clenched teeth in

my mind.

Ever since learning about Samuel’s bloodline curse, Nita had gone from “When do I get to see that handsome prince again?” to “Stay away from him, I’m begging you, Laila, I’m not ready to return to the Moon Goddess’s embrace.”

“I haven’t fallen for him.”

“You’d better not.”

Nita flicked her tail. “But my instincts are telling me-your heart is already leaning his way.”

Is it?

I froze for a beat.

Wolf spirits never lie.

They were the second pair of eyes, the second set of fangs granted to warriors by the Moon Goddess-they sensed storms, prey … and desire long before we ever did.

Am I really… falling for Prince Vance?

The thought made me steal a careful, thorough look at him-

He had his head tilted slightly. Candlelight traced the line of his jaw, sliding down like moonlight spilling over a snow cliff.

His features were almost too sharp, but right now a faint, barely-there curve softened his lips, melting all that severity into something gentle.

He was just… looking at me.

That gaze was so light, so still-as if he was afraid of startling something.

And in it, I could almost read a tenderness that bordered on indulgence—as though the entire feast, the entire endless night, had been arranged for this moment. For me.’

But how could that be?

How could Prince Vance love me?

He’d said so himself-the she-wolf he loved had already bonded with another male. And I was single.

I lowered my eyes and reined in my thoughts.

Perfect timing-the food arrived.

I shifted my attention to the spread of heat and aroma across the table.

Front and center was my childhood favorite-roasted venison ribs. A thick, dark-brown sauce of juniper and horseradish coated the seared surface, the edges charred just right, fat still crackling and popping.

I ladled a spoonful of sauce along with a few thin spaghetti soaked in the heat, and dropped them into his bowl.

“Try this. This is the good stuff.”

He looked down at the pool of reddish-brown, fiery sauce sitting in his bowl.

His expression was as serious as if he were studying an enemy camp’s defensive map.

“Eat up,” I urged. “It’s really good.”

He nodded.

Then, he picked up his fork, speared the sauce-soaked spaghetti, and put it in his mouth.

He chewed.

Swallowed.

And his eyes-at a speed visible to the naked eye-turned red.

He snatched up his water glass, took a massive gulp, and turned away, coughing.

“It just caught in my throat. I’m fine.”

I held back a laugh and refilled his glass.

As he bent his head to drink, the old cord at his collar slipped out.

Hanging from it was that leather charm-crooked stitching, rough carvings, but the edges worn smooth and warm by years of touch.

I looked away and stared at the venison on my plate.

…That thing is such an eyesore.

Does he even remember who gave that to him?

No. I have to steal that charm back. Destroy it.

I ducked my head and scooped up a bite of spaghetti. The spicy sauce exploded across my tongue-fragrant, silky, bone-meltingly good.

But my mind was nowhere near the food.

Out of the corner of my eye, the charm swayed gently with each sip he took.

I kept my voice deliberately casual.

“Your Highness, that charm…”

I paused, aiming for maximum nonchalance.

“The craftsmanship looks… pretty rough. Did you

make it yourself?”

At my question, Samuel reluctantly set down his water glass, fingers brushing the old cord at his collar.

“No, I didn’t make it. But I can’t remember who gave it to me anymore-only that it was a little girl. It was the first handmade gift I ever received, so I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away.”

He said it earnestly, a trace of genuine regret in his brow, as if he truly felt sorry about the lost

memory.

I relaxed completely.

If he hasn’t remembered after all this time, he never will.

Nice.

Time to double down on practice.

He couldn’t ever find out that the little wolf pup with awful crafting skills who used to hand out charms was sitting right across from him.
