Once a she-wolf like Laila stopped hiding how amazing she was, I knew every he-wolf would notice her.
A wave of panic hit me hard.
If I kept dragging my feet because of that cursed problem, she might end up with Vaughn. He wasn’t clueless like Holt. If he wanted her, he wouldn’t let
I already lost her once.
I couldn’t let that happen again.
But if she found out about my curse, would she still choose me?
I went back and forth in my head, uneasy and unsure.
I couldn’t decide.
“Damn it!”
I swore, shifted into my wolf form, and sprinted across the territory.
I had to sort it out before making a choice.
Laila’s POV:
“Did any of those Alpha he-wolves today interest you?” Nita asked inside
my
head.
I shook my head. “Nope. Not one. None of them compares to Prince Vance-not even close.”
“Tsk, I told you. Only Samuel matches us!” Nita wagged her tail happily. “Well, maybe Vaughn, Shane, and-”
“Alright, I get it.”
I stopped her helplessly, but my thoughts kept wandering.
If I really had to pick a mate within three months, would Samuel agree to be with me?
Just thinking about that made my face heat up.

What was I even imagining?

Whenever he was around me, he acted totally professional. There was no sign he liked me.
He only took care of me because of my father and brothers.
And honestly, I didn’t believe in love anymore. If I ever mated again, it would just be a
contract.
I couldn’t pull Samuel into something like that. He deserved someone who truly loved him.
So I forced myself to stop thinking about him.
Right then, Pearl came back from Rowan’s place carrying a big bundle.
“Ms. Conlay, Dr. Sagewood said you have to finish the medicine she gave you before. No one leaves a battlefield without wounds. They need proper care,” Pearl said while untying it. “She made a bunch of tonics and herbs herself. She told me to watch you take them for a whole month so your body fully recovers and you won’t have problems later.”
I glanced at the items. There were Heartguard Tonic, Nourishing Pills, soothing skin balms, and rows of medicine bottles.
“This must’ve cost a lot,” I said with a small smile. “She always gives me the best. Share some with Mr. Songler. He’s older. He needs it more.”
“Faulkner already sent some to him,” Pearl replied.
I nodded.
Faulkner always handled things carefully. I rarely had to worry.
“What’s that big sack by the door?” I asked, pointing at the herbs.
“That’s for bathwater,” Pearl explained. “It keeps out the cold and protects your bones. Dr. Sagewood said the freezing battlefield seeped into your body. Only medicinal baths can clear it.”
Rowan really treated me like family.
She wanted to drive out the cold and restore my health, like she was trying to bring back the bright girl I used to be.
“Okay. We’ll use it tonight.”

While I soaked in the bath, Pearl started gossiping. “On my way back, I heard something about Holt. They said-”
