Here, approaching from a short distance, was Benjamin, his cold, steely eyes wide-open. His handsome face was as expressionless as a marble statue, sending shivers down Amelia’s spine.
Daniel’s urgent voice came as he dashed up. “Nina?! Is my Nina asleep?”
Spotting the little girl with flushed cheeks in Benjamin’s arms, he reached out to stroke her face gently.
Then, he extended his arms.
“Let me take her. I’ll hold Nina,” Daniel said, taking Nina from Benjamin.
Suddenly, Benjamin’s arms were empty. Physically, it was a relief, yet an almost imperceptible frown crossed his face.
There was something about this chubby, vulnerable baby.
Just holding her for a short while had given him an unexpected feeling.
Well, it wasn’t half-bad.
She was so plump, heavy, but delightfully soft in his arms.
Benjamin absentmindedly rubbed his fingertips.
Looking up, he watched Daniel striding back.
Daniel wasn’t keeping Nina for himself.
He was bringing her to Amelia.
“Amelia, look. Nina’s back, safe and sound. No more scares,” he said tenderly as he placed Nina in her arms.
Before finding Nina, Amelia’s despair had been palpable. It was heart-wrenching, and Daniel felt as if he owed her his life.
After all, Nina had been abducted while he was taking her to class.
He was drowning in guilt.
Amelia’s wound hadn’t healed. She’d barely slept or eaten in the past day and night.
Holding Nina would be a strain, but Daniel knew she’d want to, no matter the pain.
Sure enough, Amelia gave him a grateful glance and hugged Nina tightly.
“Nina,” she cooed.
All the pain from her injury seemed to fade away as she focused on her little girl.
“You’re back. You scared Mommy to death! It’s Mommy’s fault for not protecting you,” she whispered.

As she spoke in a jumbled mess of words, she kissed Nina’s face.
Tears welled up in her eyes, and her hands trembled.
Daniel was certain that if Nina hadn’t come back, Amelia would have followed her.
Nina was her whole world.
Daniel spotted Benjamin coming over and only then remembered to chat with his brother.
“Benjamin! See this? Look at Amelia, all teary-eyed. Why don’t you go soothe her?” he suggested.
Benjamin just gave a quick look and said coolly, “Ain’t you the pro at this?”
He’d witnessed Daniel’s attempt to comfort Amelia earlier.

“Seriously?” Daniel’s eyes popped wide open. “You’re back on the scene. It’d be kinda off for me to keep consoling her. She’s your girl, right?”
Without a word, Benjamin made his way straight towards William and the cops.
Daniel frowned, watching him go.
“What’s his deal?” Daniel grumbled.
Not only was he ignoring his crying wife, but he wasn’t even peeping at his own baby.
Did he even care about his family anymore?
But Daniel kept these thoughts to himself.
Benjamin would surely give him a hard time if he said them out loud/
Still no match for Benjamin in a fight, Daniel shot him an annoyed look and then went to Amelia.
“Amelia, cut the waterworks. Nina’s okay now. I’ll keep a real close eye on her from here on. Really sorry about this mess,” Daniel said.
“Don’t blame yourself, Daniel,” Amelia replied, her voice still raspy.
She’d managed to stop sobbing. “I signed Nina up for that class, and I knew the teacher. I couldn’t have seen this coming, either.”
It was one of those inside jobs that were impossible to guard against.
