Benjamin set the cake down carefully in the center, then lifted Nelson and settled him into the chair right in front of it.

Everyone gathered around the small table. They stuck four candles into the cake.

He’d said the deepest, most hidden wish in his heart. Now he was too embarrassed to open his eyes.

The room went quiet for just one heartbeat.

Then Daniel started clapping loudly.

“Yes! That’s how you do it! You said it so loud-the wish fairy definitely heard you.

“Now open your eyes and blow out the candles. Wish granted!”

Daniel coaxed Nelson until he finally opened his eyes and puffed out the flames.

While Nelson was blowing, Amelia quietly reached over and covered Nina’s mouth-just in case.

She wasn’t taking any chances that Nina would try to blow them out, too.

After making a wish and blowing out the candles, Amelia let go of Nina’s face-Nina had been trying to pry her hands off-and started cutting the cake.

Even though the cake was made with good ingredients, kids couldn’t have too much sugar.

Amelia cut two small pieces-one for each child.

Nina stared at her tiny slice and immediately pouted, “Mommy, not this one.”

Amelia raised an eyebrow. “If you don’t want it, then you don’t have to eat any.”

Nina watched as the rest of the cake was quickly divided up. Her little piece was about to be taken away.

She scrunched her face, then said quickly, “Nina cat!”

She didn’t care about the size anymore. She grabbed he spoon and started digging in eagerly.

In no time, her small portion was gone.
