“Daddy, no hit Nina,” she said, afraid she might be next.

Given Benjamin’s tendency to tattle, Nina immediately grew wary upon hearing his words.

Benjamin didn’t reply.

Nina nearly threw a fit on the spot.

In her two and a half days away, Nina hadn’t had a single idle moment.

On the morning she was to leave with William and Benjamin, she even managed to pluck flowers from a funeral wreath and put them in her own hair.

Benjamin was truly at a loss with her.

Wearing the flowers, coughing intermittently, Nina asked Noah if she looked pretty.

After Noah said yes, he copied her and took some flowers, too.

A place like the countryside was simply too challenging to take care of someone like Nina.

On the road back, Nina’s coughing grew worse.

She’d caught a chill the night before.

Every sentence was punctuated by a cough, a sound that kept Benjamin’s brow furrowed the entire time.

He had prepared a thermometer and medicine in the car.

He’d also arranged with a doctor to see Nina as soon as they returned to Averton.

“Nina, here. Have some water,” William said from beside them, his own heart aching at the coughs.

He opened her little dinosaur water bottle and let her take several big gulps.

After drinking, Nina let out a satisfied sigh, as if she’d had something delicious.

She threw the water bottle aside with a plop and opened her mouth to speak again.

Benjamin gently pinched her lips shut.

“Alright, rest for a while. No more talking,” he said, turning on the car’s TV for her to watch.

Distracted by the screen, Nina finally settled down.

The car ride was long. Nina watched TV until, unusually she fell asleep.

This was odd.

Nina never got sleepy watching TV before. If they put it on, she could watch and watch and watch.

She didn’t get tired like adults did, but she gained energy from it.

Seeing Nina close her eyes, William also sensed something was wrong.

He took out the thermometer and handed it to Benjamin. “Take her temperature. Let’s see how she is.”

Benjamin nodded, warmed the thermometer slightly, and slipped it under Nina’s arm.

Deep in sleep, she didn’t resist, only smacked her lips a couple of times and scrunched her eyebrows.

Benjamin held her, taking her temperature.

Sure enough, she had a fever-100.4°F.

It wasn’t high enough for medicine yet, but it called for bringing the fever down physically.

Benjamin had anticipated this before they left, so he had supplies ready.

He first placed a cooling patch on Nina’s forehead.

For the remaining three hours of the journey, Benjamin didn’t rest.

When the car finally reached Averton, they didn’t go home.

The driver took them straight to the hospital.

As they arrived, Nina, who had been sleeping all this time, happened to wake up, rubbing her eyes.
