Chapter 295 Finished Her Task
The adults didn’t want the children near the mourning hall.

They were afraid the little ones, being so young, might unintentionally disrupt the solemn
occasion.
They kept shooing them away.
After being chased off by the grown-ups, Nina had an even more fallen little face.
She’d had far too many things to be upset about today.
Noah, who had been following Nina for a while, saw her stomping around the main courtyard in circles, her little hands clasped behind her back, looking absolutely furious.
He spoke up, “Nina, do you want to go play?”
Nina nodded. “Yeah.”
She hated being cooped up inside more than anything.
Seeing she wanted to play, Noah hesitated for a moment, then said, “I know another way to that courtyard. Follow me.”
Noah took the lead.
Nina trailed behind him for a few steps before generously deciding to let bygones be bygones.
“I no hit you,” she announced seriously. “Play together?”
Noah nodded. “Okay.”
Just like that, the two made up. Hand in hand, they sneaked into the courtyard with the mourning hall via a different route.
Once there, Noah led Nina behind the coffin.
He pointed at it. “Nina, Grandpa is sleeping inside.”
Nina looked at the coffin, puzzled. “Why sleep here?”
She only knew people were supposed to sleep in a bed,
There was no bed here.

Noah was stumped. “I don’t know. Mommy said Grandpa is sleeping.”

As he spoke, he touched the coffin, his expression growing sad. “I miss Grandpa. I call Grandpa, but Grandpa no talk to me. He no play with me.”
Hearing that Noah’s grandfather was ignoring him, the ever-chivalrous Nina stepped up.
“Wake him,” she declared carnestly. “No sleep. Tell him up.”
Noah shook his head, even more dejected. “I call. Grandpa no get up. He sleep. No come out.”
He had already tried.
He’d called for Gabriel many times, but couldn’t wake him.
He thought his grandpa was sleeping way too soundly.
Nina, an expert at waking up adults at home, was brimming with confidence.
She puffed out her little chest and took on the task. “Nina call. Nina good.”
Seeing her so sure of herself, Noah was practically in awe.
“Get chair.” Nina patted the coffin. It was a bit tall; she could only reach the lower part.
Noah, sneaking around, dragged two small stools over.
Standing on the stools, they were finally tall enough.
The mourning hall was empty at the moment; everyone was busy outside.
The two little ones stood on their stools, grunting as they pushed against the coffin lid.
Noah said Gabriel was inside.
To wake him, they needed to open the lid.
The coffin and its lid were made of solid wood.
While not nailed shut, the lid was still quite heavy.
Adults could push it open easily, but the two little ones didn’t have that strength.
They pushed with all their might. Pushing was exhausting. They pushed and called out to Gabriel inside.
“Grandpa, open door!”

“No sleep!”
“Come out play!”
Noah called until he got frustrated,
He hadn’t seen Gabriel in days and was genuinely upset.
Nina, unable to push the lid open or wake Gabriel, was also getting impatient.
Perhaps they tapped into some hidden potential in their frustration, or perhaps the coffin lid wasn’t tightly secured before the burial and was just resting loosely.
Whatever the reason, just as their little faces were turning red with effort, they managed to shift the lid open a crack.
With the lid slightly ajar, they leaned their little heads in to look.
They peered for a long time but only saw a small box inside.
“Grandpa is not here,” Nina said, dumbfounded. “Where Grandpa
Noah was equally baffled. “I don’t know.”
Nina eyed the small box. “Grandpa sleep box?”
Her question made Noah think for a few seconds.
