Amelia walked two circles, eyes sparkling as she looked at Benjamin. “These shoes are gorgeous, and they don’t pinch at all. What brand are they?”

She had worn countless pairs of heels before, but none had ever felt this comfortable.

Benjamin glanced at her question and answered calmly, “A niche brand. If you like them, I can have them send a few more pairs later.”

Amelia shook her head. “No need for that. It’s too much of a hassle.”

She finished trying them on and carefully put the crystal heels away.

She slipped back into her slippers and looked at Benjamin again.

He still showed no sign of leaving.

Amelia pointed at Nina. “Benjamin, I’m about to put Nina to bed.”

“Mm.” Benjamin finally moved toward the door.

Just as he turned to leave, he suddenly looked back. “Amelia.”

Amelia blinked. “What is it?”

Benjamin’s deep eyes fixed on her.

His voice was steady. “You are not unlikable.”

Amelia faltered. “What…”

Benjamin didn’t give her time to process his words. He went on calmly, “You’re very easy to like. At least to me, you are.”

With those two sentences, he turned and left the room.

Amelia stared blankly as he walked out and closed the door behind him.

She stood frozen for a long while before it finally sank in.

“Nina, your daddy… He…”

Was Benjamin comforting her? Because earlier on the phone with Jane, she had said she wasn’t

likable.

She stared at the closed door. Finally, she couldn’t hold it in anymore. She threw her arms around Nina and buried her burning face in the little girl’s chest.

She murmured, “Nina, what do I do? Your daddy is too good. I can’t handle this. What do I do, what do I do?”

Amelia rubbed her face frantically against Nina.

Nina, who had been happily playing until suddenly smothered, looked utterly confused. “Mommy?”

She raised a chubby hand, patted Amelia’s head, and asked blankly, “You sick?”

Amelia kept muttering and nuzzling her.

Nina mumbled, “Mommy, be good! Nina play!”

She was nearly suffocating under the cuddles.

She pushed at Amelia, wanting her to stop disturbing her playtime.

She still had toys to enjoy!

Amelia and Nina were tangled together in the room while Benjamin, back in his own room, had already called Freya.

Freya saw the late-night call and couldn’t resist teasing, “Calling me this late-aren’t you worried Amelia will mind?”

Even Benjamin paused for a second at the joke.

Noticing the silence, Freya laughed, “Kidding with you is impossible. Fine, serious talk. When you left today, you told me to watch Emma-what did you notice?”

“Nothing concrete,” Benjamin said coolly. “Just a feeling, something’s off about her.”

Freya nodded. “I’ll keep an eye out.” Then she asked, “Anything else?”
