Vincent said, “Gideon, get some rest. When they wake up, we’ll go hit a few balls.”

Gideon sat on the bed, wide awake. He opened his phone and searched for Amelia’s name.

Information popped up instantly-her age, her photos, every trace she’d left in the entertainment industry.

He read the details, then clicked into her pictures and videos.

For some reason, the longer he looked, the faster his heart pounded.

This Amelia was the exact same age as the lost Mia.

Same age, same strawberry allergy.

“No… she has parents. Her last name’s Parker. So she can be Mia.”

“Maybe Mia can never come back,” Gideon muttered to himself, shutting the phone like he was running away. He didn’t dare look anymore.

He couldn’t look, and he definitely couldn’t sleep.

So he just sat there, staring into space.

While Gideon sat sleepless, Nina-curled up in her own special room-slept like an angel, face smooshed into the pillow.

Every few minutes, she changed position.

At one point, she even sat straight up.

William had been watching her the whole time. The second she sat up, he squeezed his eyes shut.

Amelia had taught him the trick: never make eye contact when she was half-asleep, or she’d wake fully.

William pretended to be asleep.

Nina stared at him for several long seconds, still dazed.

A few moments later, the sleepy little girl flopped back down with a soft thud and went right back to dreamland.

William cracked one eye open, saw she was out again, then fully relaxed.

He couldn’t help himself-he leaned over and kissed her tightly clenched tiny fist.

Even asleep, Nina was so cute that William couldn’t get enough of her.

The more he spoiled her, the more he felt his own kids had been a waste.

None of them ever let him be this close-only Nina clung to him like this.

William was completely head-over-heels for his granddaughter.

Time slipped by.

William never slept a wink-he just watched Nina.

And, of course, took photos.

He posted them in the family group without tagging anyone, and the chat instantly lit up.

Daniel was first, as always.

Daniel sent, “This isn’t our house? Dad, you went to Morris Villa?”

Daniel sent a heart-eyes emoji, “My Nina is TOO CUTE

He always typed the most. William saw his messages and originally planned to ignore him, but then asked anyway, “Where are you fooling around?”

Daniel sent an eye-roll emoji, “I’m not fooling around!n doing something important!”

William sneered and sent, “Your only important job right now is to get your butt to the office!”

After William ordered him to work, Daniel went silent in the group.

But outside, he was all smiles, coaxing the real mute in front of him, “I’ve got tons more Nina videos on my phone. Wanna see?”
