Once the video connected, Daniel really wanted to speak to Alice, but he held back.

He stayed off camera so as not to scare Alice into hanging up.

All he did was silently mouth, “Nina, invite her!”

Daniel tried hard to mouth the words, but Nina didn’t een glance at him.

Her attention was fully on the video-she had no intention of responding to her uncle.

And Daniel, busy trying to direct her, didn’t realize that two-year-old Nina couldn’t be controlled with complicated adult instructions.

Under Daniel’s eager gaze, Nina started talking to Alice.

She raised her little hand that didn’t have the watch. “Mmmy hit.”

She wanted to tell everyone what had happened, one by one.

Alice comforted her with sign language.

Nina didn’t understand every sign Alice made, but she could read her expression.

The robot was Daniel’s purchase.
