Chapter 12 Benjamin Stirred
Daniel nodded. “That’s great. And don’t stress about work. Nina’s got people taking care of her at home.”
Amelia pressed her lips together before continuing. “But the opportunities he gave me… they’re probably because of you. He thinks there’s something going on between us. I tried explaining, but he wouldn’t listen.”
She knew her sudden “special treatment” came from Daniel’s influence.
When she brought it up, Daniel only smiled-light, unbothered.
“Well, we do have a connection,” he said. “I’m Nina’s uncle.”
He paused, then added, “Amelia, even if you and Benjamin aren’t planning anything… with Nina, we’re family. And family helps each other. Don’t keep me at arm’s length.”
After his little pep talk, he shifted into casual conversation.
Maybe it was Daniel’s natural charm-before either of them noticed, the atmosphere between them softened.
He even started talking about Zoe again-why he liked her.
“Zoe’s actually a really kind person,” he said. “She saved my life. Years ago, I was rebellious, doing stupid dangerous stuff. Once, I pushed too far and got stranded in the wilderness for half a month. I honestly thought I was gonna die out there. Zoe found me. She brought me back.”
He smiled faintly at the memory.
“She didn’t talk back then-completely silent. I tried using sign language, but I didn’t know a single thing.”
Even without words, he remembered her kindness.
How she smiled at him.
Their goodbye had been rushed.
Daniel was taken back by the Graham family to recover.
By the time he went back to look for her, she had disappeared.
It wasn’t until years later, when he saw her in a minor role in a tiny web drama, that he finally found her again.
The little mute girl from all those years ago had learned to speak- and the things she said still managed to cut him open.
Amelia listened quietly, unsure what to say.
She’d never been in a relationship. She didn’t have the experience to comment.
After chatting a while longer in the living room, she excused herself and went back to her room to freshen
She wanted to clean herself up and then bathe Nina for bedtime.
A short while later, Amelia went to look for her daughter.
Nina wasn’t in the playroom.
She had wandered into Benjamin’s room.
“Nina, it’s time to sleep,” Amelia called from the doorway, hesitant to go in.
Inside, only Nina was awake.
The little girl sat by her father’s bedside and waved her pudgy hand excitedly. “Mommy! Come!”
Amelia froze.
