Selina immediately understood Robert’s intentions as soon as he spoke.
It was all because of that will.
According to it, she could only claim her full inheritance if she married someone from the Carter Family.
The Clark Family and Bryant Family exploited the fact that she couldn’t marry Ryan, acting without restraint.
At that thought, her eyes gleamed, and a faint smile appeared on her lips.
Selina turned to the crowd, her expression calm, and bowed slightly. "You’ve all seen how I’m treated in the Clark Family. If they choose to punish me for this, I hope you’ll bear witness and confirm that I wasn’t intentionally causing trouble."
The crowd, already disgusted by Robert and Evelyn’s behavior, murmured in agreement.
"That mistress’s family is truly shameless!"
"Why should Selina be punished? Looks to me like Katie uses this ’family rules’ excuse to mistreat the eldest daughter of the Clark Family!"
Robert’s face twisted in panic, baffled at how quickly the crowd’s attitude had shifted.
Back in the countryside and even in the Clark Family, he could scold or beat Selina as he pleased. Everyone sided with him then, accepting his word as law. How had things come to this, where strangers were openly criticizing him?
"You... you’re all asking for trouble! Anyone who says another word is an enemy of the Clark Family!"
Robert roared furiously and turned his rage back on Selina. "You ungrateful little brat! Just wait until your father beats you to death!"
The indignant expressions on the onlookers’ faces faltered. They instinctively stepped back.
Even if the Clark Family had lost 300 million, they were still a powerful entity. Helping Selina wasn’t worth the risk of getting into trouble themselves.
"Miss Clark, don’t worry—I recorded everything," a cool male voice suddenly spoke from behind. "If you need a witness, I can vouch for you."
The crowd immediately quieted down.
Selina turned instinctively toward the voice. The speaker was a tall man dressed in a sleek, dark-gray suit, exuding an air of seriousness.
Robert’s face turned sour. "Who are you? Do you even know who I am?!"
Evelyn, emboldened, shrieked, "Selina, don’t think finding someone to speak for you will scare me! You just wait!"
The man’s expression didn’t waver. "My last name is Carter. If you truly want to know who I am, feel free to ask Ryan."
Robert’s shouting stopped abruptly, caught in his throat.
The man glanced at the store manager and said indifferently, "Get rid of them."
The store manager immediately nodded and bowed. "Of course, Mr. Carter."
Selina raised an eyebrow. His last name was Carter? And he could command the store manager? Could he be part of the Carter Family?
After Robert and Evelyn were forced out of the mall, the man turned to her. "They won’t bother you again for a while."
Selina blinked. "May I know your name, sir? I’d like to thank you properly in the future."
The man shook his head slightly. "My name isn’t worth mentioning. But if you ever need to find me, you can come to this store."
With that, he turned and walked into the store under the manager’s deferential escort.
Selina’s eyebrow arched slightly. His last name was Carter, and he’d mentioned Ryan by name. He was undoubtedly a member of the Carter Family.
But... judging by his words, he seemed to be taking over this store rather than joining Carter Group. Was he perhaps a member of a Carter Family branch?
...
Inside the store.
The store manager reported respectfully, "Mr. Carter, Miss Clark was covering a shift for a friend. Robert must’ve learned she was here and caused trouble on purpose."
The man sneered. "Ryan set his sights on someone like that?"
The manager bowed his head even lower, not daring to respond.
"Forget it," the man said casually. "If Ryan has given up on Selina, it’s the same as him giving up on the Carter Family."
"In that case, I won’t hold back."
The manager, hearing the ambition in his tone, immediately flattered him. "You’re absolutely right, Mr. Carter. Now that you’ve returned, the Carter Family rightfully belongs to you!"
Selina’s eyes flickered thoughtfully. If this man was about to take over the store, wasn’t this the perfect chance? She might be able to gather some useful information.
She nodded. "Alright, thank you, Mr. Carter."
The man smiled faintly. "Then stay close, Miss Clark. It’s crowded, and I wouldn’t want us to get separated."
Selina coughed lightly, jogged a couple of steps to catch up, and asked, "Sir, have you just returned from abroad?"
The man looked surprised. "How did you know, Miss Clark?"
"Your demeanor and manners suggest you’ve spent a lot of time in Country B. I’m curious—why did you come back to inherit this store?"
The man nodded. "You’re right—I’ve just returned from Country B. If you’d like to know why, I can explain when we’re at the store."
Selina felt she was getting closer to the truth and nodded eagerly, quickening her pace. "Then let’s go—"
Before she could finish, she bumped into someone.
Logan stood with his arms crossed, his expression indifferent, but a faint coldness glimmered in his eyes. It was unclear how long he had been standing there, watching.
The air around them seemed to freeze in an instant.
Selina: "..."
She swallowed her words, looking from Logan to Mr. Carter. Two words popped into her mind: caught cheating.
Why did Logan’s expression look like he had just caught her red-handed?
A wave of guilt hit Selina, and she swallowed hard. "Lo..."
Wait. Why should she feel guilty? She had only wanted to ask about the store. There was no reason to feel guilty!
Before she could say anything more, Mr. Carter gave a slight nod. "Logan."
Logan had arrived not long ago, just in time to see Selina eagerly following Jacob away.
He let out a cold laugh. "Mrs. Reid, you seem to be enjoying your conversation."
