Chapter 319: Angelica Gets Exposed as a Fraud

"Don’t know?"

Riley’s face went pale. "Logan..."

Logan lifted his eyelids lazily, voice cold. "I doubt someone like Mr. Green from the auction could confuse something that basic."

Luke suddenly got it. "Right! Green’s a slick guy. Even if Jack didn’t finish his call, how could he just assume that woman was you? Riley, did you maybe say something to him that made him misunderstand?"

Riley bit her lip so hard it almost bled. She felt like Logan had seen straight through her. ƒreewebɳovel.com

Damn it... but what could she do now?

She put on an expression of sudden realization. "I think I get it now. Mr. Green did say someone had asked him to look after me at the auction. And then my brother called, so I thought he meant Hunter..."

Tears fell down her delicate, graceful face, making her look pitiful. "Selina, I’m sorry. This was my fault. If you need someone to blame, blame me. I’m really sorry..."

Luke looked like he wanted to throw a few more sarcastic jabs, but Selina narrowed her eyes slightly. "Fine. Since Miss Nelson is already apologizing, if I push further, I’ll look petty. Besides, Logan can just ask Mr. Nelson about it next time."

Riley’s eyes turned red. She gave a soft sigh, like she’d known this would happen. "I knew you wouldn’t believe me, Selina... Logan, ask whoever you want. I’ll go now."

She looked like she’d just suffered some great injustice and climbed into her car. Seconds later, it drove away.

Luke leaned in and muttered to Selina, completely unsatisfied. "You’re just letting her go? Come on, Selina, you know the truth. She totally knew you were the one who bid on that pearl. She stole it on purpose."

"And now she’s pretending to be nice, giving it back like some big-hearted saint, trying to make it look like you’re being unreasonable? No way. I’m not letting that slide!"

Selina glanced up at him, giving him a look full of pity.

Luke blinked. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Selina’s tone was full of mock affection. "Do you remember what you said just now?"

Luke frowned. "What do you mean? I just said..."

Then it hit him. His whole expression collapsed. His knees even started to shake.

"Oh no. No, no, no. I cussed out Logan. Selina, you’ve got to cover for me. I’m trusting you with my life, alright?"

And before Logan could even say a word, Luke bolted out of the house like a gust of wind, screaming "ahhh!" all the way down the driveway, leaving behind a stunned silence.

A beat passed.

Then Logan let out a soft, dry chuckle. "Hah."

"L-Logan, take it easy..." Selina said, cautiously diplomatic. "Luke’s just..."

Yeah—just impulsively cursed out his own brother without knowing the full story. And judging by Logan’s face, he didn’t seem thrilled about it.

But Logan just gave her a slow, unreadable glance.

"You think I’m mad?"

Selina nodded.

He laughed softly. "I’m not mad."

"Then you..."

Logan’s gaze grew darker. He thought of the way Luke had stood up for her, angry and unfiltered.

"He did it to protect you. Why would I be mad?"

Even if Luke misunderstood, Logan knew exactly where his anger had come from.

Logan had seen the worst kinds of people in the Reid Family. He’d witnessed Amelia’s cruelty firsthand.

But in this moment, thinking about Luke’s outrage on Selina’s behalf...

He’d never hated Amelia more.

Why? Why was it that she never had a brother of her own—but someone like Riley did, and he doted on her constantly?

Ugh. No use thinking about it. What, was she supposed to go steal Riley’s brother for herself?

Selina shook off the thought and went back to studying the pearl. She didn’t let it get to her.

Elsewhere, Kyle was on his way to bring a gift to Angelica when he heard that Grandma Morris had arrived in City A. He decided to stop by her courtyard first.

But as soon as he stepped inside, he was surprised to see that Angelica was already there.

Kyle had planned to knock... until he heard a voice through the door.

"I know you’re not Victoria Hill’s daughter. But... I can make sure you are."

Kyle froze in place, hand still mid-air. His eyes widened, his body went rigid like he’d been struck by lightning.

Did he just hear... that Angelica wasn’t Mom’s biological daughter?

No way.

Kyle held his breath, body cold all over, and kept listening.

...

Twenty minutes earlier.

Grandma Morris had arrived in City A. Joe picked her up, visibly excited. "Mom, I found Victoria’s daughter! Angelica—come say hi to your grandma!"

But Grandma Morris, raised with wealth and used to being obeyed, had always looked down on Victoria. Naturally, her attitude toward Victoria’s daughter was just as cold.

Her voice was sharp, dismissive. "No need for introductions. Joe, you never married that woman. Now you expect her daughter to call me Grandma? Bit premature, don’t you think?"
