Previously, those people had agreed to work with Owen simply because Logan hadn’t yet invested...
But now that Logan was involved, was there even a question of who they would choose?!
Amelia was trembling with rage. "You ungrateful bastard—"
"Mrs. Perry," Selina blinked innocently. "What difference does it make whether that land ends up in Logan’s hands or your adopted son’s? You’re all family, aren’t you?"
She threw Amelia’s own words right back at her. "Why are you so upset that your biological son is more capable? If someone didn’t know better, they might think Logan was the adopted one."
Amelia’s expression darkened instantly. Furious, she snapped, "I’m talking to Logan—who do you think you are to butt in?! If Logan weren’t so greedy, I wouldn’t have to come after him in the first place!"
Greedy? Selina found the logic laughable.
She let out an exaggerated sigh. "I just find it ironic. Logan’s ability and status speak for themselves—of course people wouldn’t choose Owen. How is that Logan’s fault?"
She hadn’t expected Amelia to act even more self-righteous. With an air of entitlement, she sneered, "That’s exactly why Logan shouldn’t have interfered in this project from the start! The family already told him to give up that land to Owen, but he just wouldn’t listen! If he had just handed it over, there wouldn’t be an issue at all!"
The air went completely still for a moment.
Selina’s tone was laced with meaning. "Hand it over?"
Amelia mistook it as fear and let out a smug chuckle. "Reid Group is already big enough. What’s the point of Logan expanding further? Fighting his own brother over this is just making a fool of himself!"
Selina instinctively glanced at Logan.
The man’s expression remained calm, as if Amelia’s words had nothing to do with him.
But inside, Selina’s anger crackled like wildfire.
What kind of twisted logic was this?! A so-called biological mother who only had eyes for her adopted son—even forcing Logan to hand over everything he had built.
Selina let out a cold laugh and spoke slowly, "From what I understand, this land is part of Reid Group’s plans for the second half of the year. Since Owen wants it too, then let them compete fairly."
"The business world is like a battlefield. Logan fought his way to the top—so why does Owen have to rely on handouts?"
"Mr. Reid, it’s okay if you’re not strong enough, but forcing someone else to give you their share... doesn’t that make you look completely useless?"
Owen was shaking with anger. Although he was adopted, he had lived a privileged life and had never been humiliated like this.
Amelia was livid. "Selina, shut your mouth!"
"Why should I? Did I hit a nerve? I’m just curious—Owen and Logan are the same age, so how come Logan can do things that Owen can’t? Is it because Owen is just a man-sized baby?"
"Logan, I truly feel for you. No father’s love, no mother’s care—you had to build everything from scratch through sheer hardship. Unlike your brother, who may be a giant baby, but at least he has Mrs. Perry fawning over him. Must be nice."
...
The air turned deathly silent.
Jack lowered his head and thought to himself, As expected of Madam—her words cut like a knife.
Logan’s brows gradually relaxed, and a warmth spread in his chest.
Amelia had come to confront Logan, but she hadn’t expected to be utterly torn apart by Selina’s words. Her face was ashen, and fury burned inside her like an unextinguished fire.
"You shut up! This is our family’s business—who do you think you are to interfere?! Logan, I order you to hand over that land! Do you hear me?!"
Selina raised an eyebrow. Amelia was truly willing to throw away every last shred of dignity for her adopted son. How touching.
But then...
A thought suddenly occurred to her. Her eyes twinkled mischievously as she turned to Logan.
"You know what, Logan? I think Mrs. Perry is right. Maybe... you should just hand it over."
Everyone froze in shock.
Amelia furrowed her brows, still trying to understand why Selina had suddenly changed her stance, when she heard her say—
"After all, with your capabilities, countless investors are practically lining up to give you land for free. So that plot in South City is nothing more than a trivial asset to you."
"But Mr. Reid is different. He’s a complete failure! Without this land, what will he do for the rest of his life? Sit around, utterly useless, wasting away?"
Selina spoke with deep emotion, as if she were genuinely distressed:
Now that the price had reached this absurd level and Logan still wasn’t backing down, Owen naturally wouldn’t either.
In the end, Owen would end up purchasing the land at a sky-high price—one that the Perry Family wouldn’t be able to cover.
Selina was intrigued. "What if Owen doesn’t take the bait?"
Logan’s lips curved slightly as he looked at her. "He will."
Selina was puzzled.
Logan remained nonchalant, as if the matter didn’t even require a second thought. "Because Owen refuses to stay beneath anyone. Unfortunately for him, he lacks the strength to rise."
Selina suddenly understood.
Owen was an adopted son. Even with the Perry Family’s backing, he would always remain an outsider in name. That was why he was desperate to prove himself.
And if he managed to take a project that originally belonged to Logan, what would people say?
—As expected of the Perry Family’s prized heir. Truly outstanding!
Unfortunately, Owen had already walked straight into Logan’s trap...
Selina looked up, about to say something, when a sudden realization struck her like lightning—
Wait.
Wasn’t Logan the heir of the Carter Family? She had long accepted the fact that he used the surname Reid... but why was Owen also named Reid?!
Logan had mentioned changing his surname before, but there was no way Owen had done the same, right?
Reid and Carter...
The more Selina thought about it, the more something felt off.
Logan noticed her pause. His gaze darkened slightly, though his voice remained as warm as ever.
"Mrs. Reid, what are you thinking about?"
