“Your best friend—she might've just hit her limit.”
Whitney took a deep breath, trying to stay calm.
First off, she hadn’t even known Valerie had the baby… She’d missed so much.
“I’m sorry, Ludwik, but I have to go see her!”
“Yeah.” Ludwik’s warm voice rumbled into her hair, his hand gently rubbing her forehead. “I knew you’d be anxious. That’s why I didn’t try to stop you just now.”
Suddenly, it made sense—why he’d insisted on a moment together before she left.
Her heart twisted a little. She looked up at him, her eyes shining and damp. After a moment, once she’d steadied her emotions, she rose on her toes, leaned close to his ear, and whispered, “We’ve got plenty of time ahead of us. No need to rush tonight.”
Was that… her way of making a promise?
Stubborn woman.
Not long ago, in their room, she’d sworn she’d never forgive him.
But now, something rippled in Ludwik’s deep eyes—like still water stirring into waves. His rough palm cupped her slender neck and pulled her in, pressing her tight against his chest.
Whitney let out a soft gasp, her lips brushing against his throat.
His hand slid down to her waist. He bent to kiss her hair, voice thick with emotion. “Whitney, I’m taking that as a promise. A lot of time… like the rest of our lives, right?”
He held her so firmly she couldn’t move.
Breathing against his collarbone, she promised quietly, “Ludwik, I meant what I said. I won’t go back on it.”
“Baby…” His voice trembled, full of feeling.
His eyes, dark and deep as the ocean, seemed to whirl with emotion. He tipped up her chin, her soft skin soothing the wild beat of his heart. “You still love me.”
Whitney pressed her lips together.
Before pushing him away, she leaned in to kiss his jaw.
Ludwik let out a low, ragged sound. “Is this goodbye or are you trying to set me on fire?”
Ludwik stood tall where she’d left him, not following. With a wave, he signaled a butler to carry Whitney’s luggage up.
The propellers spun. Whitney’s long hair streamed behind her in the night breeze, looking almost like watercolor strokes from a painting—etched into Ludwik’s memory.
He called out quietly, “Come back soon.”
“You better wait for me!”
They spoke almost in unison. She hadn’t even left yet, and already she missed him.
A slow smile curled Ludwik’s lips, wolfish and dark. “I’ll get the wedding ready.”
Whitney’s face flushed instantly—he really didn’t waste any time!
Only once she’d buckled into her seat and watched the Lippert estate shrink beneath the helicopter did she finally pull her thoughts away from him, her mind sinking with worry for Valerie.
Quickly, she grabbed her phone, connected to the wi-fi, and started calling Tiana.
