“What the heck? What kind of stunt is Grandma pulling this time? She’s lost her mind, humiliating us in front of the Nelson family like that.” Hudson’s face darkened with anger as he spoke.
He turned to Whitney. “She’s really thinking of kicking you out? She’s completely lost it!”
Whitney finally let her guard down in front of her father, her voice tinged with wry self-mockery. “Ever since Florence died, Grandma’s hated me with a vengeance. She thinks you don’t care enough about Florence’s death, and now that you’ve handed over the reins of the Sheldon Group to me, she’s terrified she’ll lose her influence. That’s why she’s trying to use Sienna to control the Nelsons.”
“As if the Nelson family would be so easily manipulated,” she added, shaking her head.
“But don’t worry, Dad. The Nelsons might be mad, but I’ve managed to keep Shane on our side.”
“She’s trying to marry Shane off to Sandy? He’d never cut ties with us over that,” Whitney assured him.
Hudson blinked, clearly caught off guard. “He wants to marry Sandy?”
Whitney chuckled softly. “I’ll explain that later. Right now, I’m guessing Grandma’s threatening you with another one of her melodramatic suicide stunts?”
“Your Grandpa can’t even talk her down. She’s gone completely off the rails,” Hudson grumbled, his expression stormy.
Now that he understood the whole story, Hudson felt no sympathy for his mother. Wasn’t she just trying to tear the family apart—again? Years ago, she’d meddled endlessly in his marriage to Holly Walker, but he’d always let it slide because she was his mother. For the sake of the family, he’d turned a blind eye to plenty over the years.
But now, she was trying to drag his own daughter into her schemes?
Hudson’s thoughts flickered to Parisa. He clenched his fist. “How many mistakes has she made over the years? Spoiling Florence and Sienna until they both ended up like this! Your grandma is short-sighted and manipulative. If she’s trying to threaten me to force you out… I won’t allow it. If she wants to throw a tantrum, let her. I’m done.”
Hudson’s eyes widened. “The Lutzes? The boating magnates—the younger son?”
Whitney nodded. “Exactly. It won’t be long before the whole social circle finds out about Sienna’s little romance. Her reputation will be toast. And if I let the Lutz family know what’s going on, there’s no way they’ll accept her.”
She leaned in, her tone practical. “Just ask Grandma if she wants to see Sienna ruined. Say what you will about her, but she won’t let Sienna end up with nothing. And if you give Sienna a heads-up, she’ll stir up drama with Grandma herself.”
“That’ll shift the focus—and Grandma will have bigger things to worry about than fighting you. And if Sienna really does end up marrying into the Lutz family, it’ll be because you allowed it, and Grandma will have to play nice.”
Hudson took a long breath, finally allowing himself a small, satisfied nod. For the first time in a long while, it felt like the tide might finally be turning.
