I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 813

Without thinking, I asked, "Who is it?"

The maid hesitated, looking uncomfortable. "I didn't ask. It's a middle-aged woman, very elegantly dressed. She didn't say what it was about, just that you should come out and see her right away."

I paused. A middle-aged woman?

The only middle-aged woman I could think of was Edith, but she usually just texted me if she needed something.

Could it be that Edith had calmed down, felt she'd overreacted before, and was too embarrassed to call, so she came in person instead?

I set down the tray and told Tess to take the food up to Steven. He'd had a fever all night and needed to eat, or his body wouldn't hold up.

Then, I went to the door alone. I saw a familiar figure with her back to me, but I couldn't quite place her. "Hello, can I help you...?"

As soon as I spoke, the woman turned around. My brow furrowed instantly. "You?!"

Mary, dripping with jewelry, looked me up and down. "Zephyra, what kind of attitude is that? I'm Steven's mother. I was your mother-in-law, after all. How dare you speak to me in that tone?"

Mother-in-law?

My expression turned cold. Hearing that title from her lips was incredibly ironic.

When had she ever treated me like a daughter-in-law? In her eyes, I was nothing more than a baby-making machine, treated worse than the household staff.

I retorted, "Well, what should I say? How about, 'Get the hell off my property'? Is that better for you?"

Mary's face turned ashen, her gaze tightening on me.
