"Director Chen!"
Josephine Liang couldn't talk to him on the phone, so she came to wait for him at his house.
It was completely dark inside, which meant that Director Chen wasn't home. Josephine was extremely anxious, but she had to wait patiently by the door.
It was almost July, and the night breeze was rather pleasant, but it only felt cold to Josephine.
When Director Chen finally drove back home, Josephine opened her car door and rushed over before he could even park his car. She kept hitting on Director Chen's car window. "What's going on, Director Chen?"
Director Chen glanced at the unseemly woman besides his car. He frowned slightly, but still opened the door and got out. Standing in front of Josephine, his expression was cold and was no longer as gracious and cordial as he used to be. "Why are you here?"
"I just want to know why you removed me from the role?"
"Have you read the news?" Director Chen raised his eyebrows. "The investor said that he wanted to change the cast. That's all there is to it."
Josephine was still hanging onto a thread of hope before this, but her heart violently sank when she heard Director Chen's answer.
"Director Chen, are you sure there isn't some sort of mistake? Why change the cast so suddenly? You know we've been shooting this for over a month now..."
"And you should know after working in this industry for years that the investors are our lifeblood. We can't go on living without our blood, so whatever they tell us to do we'll have to obey."
Josephine was so enraged that she began shouting without a second thought, "Did your lifeblood order you to drug me last night as well?"
"..." Director Chen's face darkened, but he did not say anything.
"Even if that's the case, why do you have to remove me?" The words were already out of Josephine's mouth and she couldn't stop, "Director Chen, my father gave you thirty million when I got the role, and now you're removing me on a whim? That's unacceptable!"
Director Chen's patience was running thin. He furrowed his eyebrows and said, "The new investor will compensate double that thirty million. Come on, it's late, you should go now." After that, he began walking straight towards the door to his house.
"Director Chen..."
Director Chen turned around to look at Josephine's twisted face. He thought about what he had done recently to further his future career and finally opened his mouth. "I don't know why they suddenly removed you, but Josephine, I'll offer this piece of advice for old time's sake. Sometimes it's better to keep a low profile in this industry. Why bother provoking someone you know that you shouldn't?"
It was obvious from last night's events that Josephine had offended that richling somehow. Although he didn't know it exactly, it was beyond his jurisdiction anyway.
"A low profile?" When Josephine heard him, she immediately sneered and growled in response, "Are you calling me high- profile? I put on a smile for everyone and hand out gifts left and right, I rolled around in the dirt of this industry for years and finally got to where I am today, but you're just gonna watch me fall?"
Director Chen closed his eyes. He felt somewhat sorry for the hysterical woman in front of him, but he could only do so much.
"Director..."
"Bang—", the sound cut off Josephine's sentence.
Josephine gritted her teeth and her face was ghastly pale. She dug her nails deeply into her palms, but she did not feel any pain.
After a long while, she finally came back to her senses. She returned to her car and took out her phone—
"...Theodore, where are you?"
"There is no need to worry, Mr. Wang, I assure you that won't happen... Yes, yes, I understand... Don't worry..."
"Mr. Chang... I'm sorry to keep you waiting..." Josephine saw that Theodore Chao was answering one phone call after another. She was already in a horrible mood and had run out of patience. She stepped forward and snatched Theodore's phone from his hand and ended the call, then pulled out the cables of the landline phones on his desk.
Theodore looked at her with irritation. "What the hell's wrong with you, Josephine?"
"What's wrong with me? Haven't you heard the news? I'm not on Flowers On the Path anymore, and instead of comforting me at least a little, you're just gonna keep answering phone calls?"
"I did hear the news, so did every company who's working with us. They're calling me to ask about what happened!"
Josephine had actually guessed that that was the reason why Theodore was so busy answering phone calls. "Ask about what? Why did it happen? Would knowing why help them at all? What's the point of picking up these calls?"
"Josephine..." Annoyed, Theodore sat in his boss chair, "Now is not the time to lose your temper. If we mess this up, they might even stop working with us from now on..."
"Stop working with us? Then tell them to find another better company! Their sh*tty deals don't mean anything to the Liang or Chao Company anyway!"
When Theodore heard this, he couldn't help but frown. He looked up at Josephine's frenzied appearance in front of his desk and just felt extremely tired. "Josephine, you know that I've worked day and night with the company and had endless meetings and discussions for these deals, I put my blood and sweat into them..."
Josephine looked resentful as she pushed Theodore away. "I was wondering why you didn't call me after the news came out! Meanwhile, you're doing business all nonchalantly in your office, you're unbelievable, Theodore!"
Theodore took a step back and stopped. With a serious look on his face, he asked, "So I'm right?"
He softly spoke those three simple words, but to Josephine's ears, they sounded like a heavy blow on her heart, sending her into a momentary panic.
After some thought, Josephine decided to confess. "Yeah! But Theodore, you know I did this just to get that loan for the Liang Company. President Lee told us that the only way he would give us the loan is if Elizabeth Liang..." As she said this, she stepped forward and tightly grabbed Theodore's shirt collar with both hands. "I told you about our funding problem, and you said that you'll think of a way, but it was taking too long, so I had to do this. Do you know that because of the funding problem my dad's hair has..."
"And that's why you plotted against and persecuted Elizabeth like that?!"
Josephine couldn't stomach his words and let go of her hands. "How can you say that Theodore? Didn't we do the same thing last time?" With this, she couldn't help but sneer at him, "What, you think you have the right to lecture me now just because you didn't participate this time?"
Theodore paused and said, "How is that the same?"
"How is that different? We were giving her to President Lee both times!"
"Josephine, you..." Theodore coughed quietly and awkwardly. "Your family already has everything you guys wanted. Isn't that enough? Plus I've already left Elizabeth, what else do you want? Josephine, Elizabeth is your sister."
Nothing could get through to Josephine at this point. "Theodore, just tell me, are you going to help me with this or not?" The Liang Company's capital chain was already breaking down and they couldn't take out any more money, so Theodore was her last and only hope.
"Josephine, why don't you stay at home and rest for a while..."
"Theodore Chao! You just don't want to pay for that role, huh? Are you worried about making your ex sad or are you afraid that James Lu will target you?"
"What the hell are you saying?!"
"Am I wrong?"
Theodore gazed deeply into her, "We'll talk after you calm down." After that, he walked right out of the office. Incensed, Josephine threw everything on the desk to the ground. After she finished her tantrum, she plopped down on the chair and clenched her fists, then muttered hatefully, "Elizabeth, if you're gonna make my life hell, I'll make sure that your life is no better than mine!"
She took out her phone and quickly dialed a number
"Margot..."
