A loud noise came from outside. The window was closed, so Elizabeth was startled, "What happened?" After she said that, there was another loud noise. With a whoosh, a brilliant firework shot into the sky. "It's a firework!" Elizabeth said with joy, "Who's letting off fireworks so late at night?"
James looked out of the window and then understood.
He did not answer, but just said, "Why don't we go to have a look?"
"Okay!"
Therefore, the two of them went to the balcony.
In the open space downstairs, John was standing next to a bunch of fireworks which were neatly arranged and were of different packages and colors. At this time, seeing them come out, he even reached out and waved at them with a smile, which was completely different from his usual style.
Elizabeth was stunned for a moment and looked at John downstairs. Then she looked up at the dazzling fireworks and immediately understood. They let off fireworks to celebrate her birthday specially.
Her eyes blurred with tears instantly, and there were so many emotions in her heart that she could not think of a word to describe it. She was happy, touched, and delighted... She really couldn't tell how she felt.
Standing next to her, James glanced at her and saw her expression clearly. He smiled and didn't make fun of her. He just held her thin shoulder and gently pulled her into his arms.
"James..." She whimpered in a choked voice and called his name softly.
"Yes, I'm here. Dad and mom are also here." After that, he pointed at the rope that was shaking next to him, "Look at this."
Elizabeth looked in the direction he was pointing at. With the help of the lights in the house and the fireworks in the sky, she could see clearly that a rope was swaying outside the balcony, and there was a beam of light approaching her and getting brighter.
In less than half a minute, a bamboo basket appeared on the edge of the fence. Inside the basket, there was an exquisite cake which was filled with candles and decorative stars.
The candlelight flickered. The night was dark, but Elizabeth felt that the candlelight was so brilliant that it shone directly on her heart, making her feel warm.
"Elizabeth!"
Lydia's cheerful voice came from the top of her head.
Elizabeth looked up, only to see Lydia standing on the balcony on the third floor. She leaned out over the railing and smiled at her, holding the rope which was tied with the bamboo basket in her hand.
Seeing that Elizabeth was looking at her, Lydia reached out to wave at her and said, "Happy birthday!"
James raised his eyebrows and finally understood why Lydia had just said that her surprise would be more impressive in the dark night. It seemed that she was right.
Although he was not as moved as Elizabeth, he remembered that he was naughty when he was a child, and John locked him up in the room and did not allow him to eat, but Lydia sent him food like this...
Besides, he was really grateful because John and Lydia did these things for Elizabeth. Seeing this scene and thinking of the past, his heart softened and he felt warm.
He was really glad that he was born in such a family, not only because of his powerful family background but also because of the love from his parents.
"Mom..." Elizabeth called Lydia and grinned, but tears kept running down her cheeks.
"Elizabeth, what are you waiting for? Hurry up and take the cake!"
James raised his hand and wiped the tears for Elizabeth, saying softly, "Honey, take it."
"Okay." Elizabeth nodded heavily, took two steps forward, and picked up the cake in the basket.
John just nodded with a smile and said, "Today is your first birthday since you married into our family. Happy birthday."
Elizabeth bit her lip and said, "Well, thank you, dad." After that, she turned around and threw herself into Lydia's arms, saying with tears, "Mom, thank you, too... I... This is the best birthday I've ever had in my life."
It was really the most wonderful birthday in her life. In the past, her parents always celebrated her birthdays for her. At that time, she was also very happy, and every year they did the same thing. They went out to play together, ate cake and then blew out the candles.
That was a warm thing, but... it had become something in the past.
Later, although there were Theodore and her uncle who celebrated her birthdays for her, it was really not as good as the surprise and happiness they gave her that day.
She... had thought that they didn't know about it, but... she didn't expect that they would hold such a grand ceremony for her. She felt that she was no longer alone in this world, and there were so many people caring about and loving her.
Moreover, they could have asked others to let off the fireworks and send her cake, but they did all these by themselves...
She was really... too happy.
Lydia was suddenly at a loss when she saw Elizabeth like this, but she came to sense just after one second. She patted Elizabeth on the back with a chuckle, "Elizabeth, isn't this what we should do? We haven't done anything special. As long as you're happy."
After that, Lydia added, "The most important thing is that you like it."
"I like it..." Elizabeth sniffed and repeated, "I like it very much." How could she not like what they had done?
"Alright." Lydia gently pushed her away, "Come on. Let's ignite the fireworks."
