Everyone gasped, barely able to process what had just happened.

In the blink of an eye—

"Auntie, watch out!"

A small figure darted forward, shoving Blanche out of harm's way.

The boy's momentum sent him tumbling across the ground, landing in a heap nearby.

Blanche hit the ground hard, her head spinning. When someone hauled her up, she was still dazed and disoriented.

"Sis-in-law!"

"Laney!"

"Aunt Blanche!"

The other parents called out anxiously, "Mrs. Simmons!"

"Hedwig," breathless with worry, gripped Blanche's arm and quickly looked her over, scanning for any injuries before finally breathing a sigh of relief. "Are you hurt anywhere? Are you alright?"

If her brother found out she'd brought his wife here and failed to keep her safe, he'd never let her hear the end of it.

Blanche managed a faint smile. "I'm fine."

She steadied herself and immediately hurried to the little boy who had saved her. She knelt beside him, brushing the dirt from his clothes and gently inspecting him, only to find his palm scraped raw from the rough pavement.

"Thank you, sweetheart," she said softly. "Let me take you to the nurse to get that cleaned and bandaged."

But the boy shook his head, utterly unfazed by the scrape. "Pretty lady, it's just a scratch. My teacher can clean it up for me. My dad says I'm a tough guy—little cuts don't bother me."

He looked up at her, concern shining in his eyes. "Are you okay?"

Blanche's heart melted at his selflessness—hurt himself, yet worried only for her. She smiled warmly, then turned to glare at Lara, her expression suddenly dark as a storm cloud.

"Mother-in-law, is this the child you said you could raise to be well-behaved?"

"I will never take in a child like this."

Loraine was stunned by what Lara had done. Without hesitation, she turned and slapped Lara across the face, then snapped at the housekeeper, "Take her home. Now!"

The staff hurried forward, scooping Lara into their arms. She stared ahead, stunned, a red mark blooming on her cheek.
