Rebekah appeared in the hospital corridor with Hedwig Simmons, little Tia, and Healy.
She had gone to see Hedwig that day, hoping to apologize to Eddy for her brother’s rudeness. When she heard Eddy was visiting Leda at the hospital, she thought she should stop by as well—after all, Leda had been hurt because of her brother. So Rebekah, Hedwig, and the two children all came together.
Just then, Rebekah heard Healy call out to Blanche. Startled, she dropped the fruit basket she was carrying; apples and oranges tumbled and rolled in every direction.
Healy ran ahead, wrapping his arms tightly around Blanche.
Blanche froze, stunned, but turned to look at the boy. The way Healy’s eyes crinkled when he smiled was so much like Eddy’s.
Suddenly, memories surged back—lying in a pool of blood, Mamie nearly lost. Blanche’s face went pale with pain.
For the last two years, she had fallen asleep every night with Mamie in her arms. She remembered Healy believing Rhoda Doyle’s lies, trying to harm her Mamie. She remembered Jeannette trying to push her down the stairs. She remembered Eddy’s cold, emotionless command to Dr. Smith to take Mamie away. Each time, she’d wake up in a cold sweat, clutching Mamie’s small face and kissing her until the fear subsided.
Blanche gently pushed Healy away, then turned to Ablett, who was waiting beside her. “Let’s go.”
“Alright.”
Ablett wrapped his arm protectively around Blanche and led her away, their group slipping out by the other exit.
Healy stood frozen for a long moment, unable to process what had just happened. He couldn’t believe it—his mother really didn’t want him.
One thousand and eighty-six days. His mother had been gone from him for 1,086 days.
He missed her so much.
Healy scrambled to his feet and tried to follow, but was stopped by plainclothes officers guarding the hall.
Desperate, he called out to Blanche’s retreating figure, voice breaking. “Mom! It’s me, Healy! Your favorite son!”
“Mom—!”
Tears streamed down his cheeks, unstoppable.
