"Sir, should I get the sedative?" the head bodyguard asked quietly.
"Sedatives come with side effects," Eddy replied. There was no need for surgery, so he saw no reason to put any more strain on his wife's body.
The master bedroom was so still that every small sound was amplified.
Blanche's heart clenched tighter with every passing second. The Director-General's people were already in Novandria, waiting for their moment to take her away. The organization needed her desperately; she couldn't afford any delays. But the child growing inside her was her only comfort, her one regret in this life—she could not lose her.
Her hand loosened around the pill bottle. She had to come clean with Eddy.
As Blanche opened her eyes, Eddy scooped her up and, without warning, pressed his mouth to hers.
Something foreign touched her tongue, gliding swiftly to the back of her throat.
Eddy forced a pill between her lips, deepening the kiss so she couldn't resist. His voice was low and coaxing, "Easy, sweetheart. You'll feel better soon, I promise."
A wet, suffocating sensation overwhelmed her. Her breath caught as terror widened her eyes. She pressed her hands to his chest, struggling fiercely, but it was no use.
Tears spilled hot and fast from her reddened eyes.
He kept kissing her, as if trying to soothe her aching heart—or maybe to protest her recent coldness toward him.
"Sweetheart… darling…" His murmurs clung to her skin, but her heart felt numb and hollow.
After two minutes, he finally let go.
A sharp slap echoed through the room.
A vivid red handprint bloomed on Eddy's cheek, but he didn't flinch. He reached for Blanche's tear-stained face, but she shoved him away.
She rushed to the bathroom, slammed the door, turned on the tap, and retched violently.
Half a pill slipped from her lips, followed by a handful of bright, multicolored capsules.
She heaved until nothing was left.
Through the frosted glass, she could make out his tall, broad silhouette—ominous, almost monstrous. A shiver of fear ran through her.
She'd never thought she could hate him.
