His Reluctant Luna novel Chapter 54

Lucian's POV -

"Follow the rogues when they reach the back alley," I commanded into the radio and then waited.

I heard Rick reply with affirmative. We were near a seedy club. It was frequented by some rogues. I had not brought any of my betas with me. Neither did Rick. Daniel had his reinforcements waiting, a few streets away. We were here to just observe.

I had a feeling that the rogues were getting tipped off by some mole. It could have been anyone from any of the packs. I did not rule out the involvement of some Alphas too. Hence, to keep things discreet, we decided to keep it an Alpha only operation. So, here I was with Rick and Daniel waiting.

"They are out," Daniel whispered.

We waited in the van and watched the rogue head off, a few minutes later. We had masked our scents.

Rick made his way out of the club, following our man.

We continued to follow him. He went to a junkyard a couple of blocks away.

We parked the van around a curve and watched him go into a small dumped trailer. It sounded like he was talking to someone. A truck dropped off several men in front of the junkyard, and I gasped.

"Those are wolves!" I exclaimed.

"I thought you had cleared off your territory," Daniel said.

"I was wrong," I replied.

Once the wolves were in the dump yard, we got off the van and joined Rick, who was hiding behind a huge mangled truck. They could not scent us, but we could hear them, which worked to our advantage.

"How much have you got?" A woman's voice was heard.

"The packs are looking for us, they have finished off other gangs. You promised us power, and we have been giving you cash but looks like your spells don't work anymore." A gruff voice said.

"That is because you have failed to get her. We need her for the blood magic. This petty cash is not going to make you strong. Get me that girl."

"It's not that easy! Packs have gone into lockdown, they have military-level security, it's impossible to breach and capture an Alpha." The man grumbled.

"You all were stupid enough to use these bullets for capturing useless omegas and committing petty crimes. You drew too much attention. Now the packs are after you." The woman scolded.

"Stop it, woman! We'll get the girl. Then what?"

"Then I can create more deadly potions. Something which would be able to destroy the entire pack."

I knew whom this conversation was about. They were talking about my mate, and it took all my self-control to not jump in and tear them to pieces. I looked over at Rick, but his countenance was stone.  He had the same thought.

They argued for some time, then the rogues started to leave.

"What do we do now?" Daniel whispered.

This was a golden opportunity to capture the witch as well as the rogues, but we were uncertain if the witch was alone or with others. If we killed her, who may or may not be Regina. The danger would remain. They were splitting. The woman went off in another direction and the rogues started to mount their truck.

"Daniel, you have your enforcement ready? I asked.

He nodded.

" Good, you call in your betas and take care of the rogues. Meanwhile, Rick and I will follow the witch."

The lights in the security suite died instantly and were replaced with backup lights. Bullets were whizzing past us in the dim half-light. Rick and I crouched low as the men assaulted the door and tried to get in. They were shooting so many rounds, we'd be hit eventually. Suddenly, the light died completely. I hurried toward the door and a bullet grazed the side of my arm. Shifting into the hybrid, I broke through the door and attacked the men in the hall. The hall was in chaos.

Some men had guns and were shooting. I heard shots coming from behind me. It seemed Rick was firing on the men. Working together, we took out the contingent that was there. Between Rick and I, we obliterated everyone we came across. I heard the opening and closing of doors. Then running footsteps.

"They are escaping," I shouted at Rick, and we dashed upstairs.

There were two women and 1 man, who smelled familiar. He was a wolf, of course.

"Chase them!" I shouted.

They knew we were there. They had the guns with those potent bullets. I could feel my arms sting with poison where the bullet had grazed it. I'd have to take heavy fire if I wanted to approach them.

Rick and I grabbed two guns from the dead wolves and ran after the retreating figures. They ran down a maze of corridors and escaped out of the back door.

"I am calling Daniel, "Rick shouted.

But there was no time. I followed them out into the backyard. They were jumping into a small truck, its engine revving. I bolted for it and was hit with several rounds from a gun, the woman was firing at me. My upper leg bone was hit on the right, I knew it. I just managed to move out of the line of fire.

Crouching and gathering my strength, I grabbed the back of the truck and held it with all my might. Its tire whirled on the concrete making a whirring noise, but the truck didn't budge. Suddenly, a large brown form jumped next to me, Rick was next to me holding the truck back. I dug my claws into the metal of the back of the truck. The woman loaded her gun and aimed at Rick. I pushed him on instinct. Pain seared my chest as bullets hit my lungs. Rick had stabled himself, and he managed to grab the woman with the gun and tossed her out of the back of the truck. Metal tore as the side of the truck was ripped to shreds.

"Leave the truck," Rick shouted.

I did, as we watched, it suddenly sped ahead and tilted dangerously.

"It's going to crash," Rick said, those were the last words I heard before everything went dark.
