"Jonathan, don't you have anything better to do?!" "Who says?" Jonathan glanced down at Marlin in his arms and chuckled. "I'm busy taking care of my son!"
In the end, Jonathan did as Niamh said and ate. But since Marlin was getting drowsy, he just ordered a bowl of noodles and finished it quickly. "Let's go," he said. "Where to?" "Home." Jonathan gave Niamh a charming smile and took Marlin from her. The baby wasn't asleep yet, but he was clearly lethargic. At one year old, he was much heavier than a newborn, and Niamh usually struggled to carry him for long. With Jonathan's help, it was a relief.
As they left the restaurant, they looked like a happy family of three to any onlooker. Niamh was about to get into the car when a movement in a nearby alley caught her eye. Two large men were standing there. She could just make out the figures they had cornered: the middle-aged woman from the Quinn family who worked as the restaurant's janitor. It looked exactly like a scene of loan sharks collecting a debt.
If the woman had been alone, Niamh wouldn't have interfered. But trapped with her in the alley was a little girl, who looked to be in elementary school. It seemed she'd already been hit; there were marks on her face. "If you don't pay up, I'll sell her to the highest bidder!" one of the men snarled, reaching for the girl.
Just as he did, someone kicked him hard from behind. A series of thuds and bangs echoed from the alley, followed by blood-curdling screams. A moment later, Prescott emerged. He had taken off his suit jacket, and his white shirt was disheveled and stained with blood.
