The orphanage might not be able to offer Mike backing, but he could become one for them.
The process of retrieving the millennium-old corpse soil was surprisingly easy.
Mike picked a small vial with the texture he thought was the most suitable, sealed it with a talisman, then patted his backpack and called it a day.
"Alright. Let's go."
Seeing how he only took so little, Lexie asked, "Is that even enough? You should take more, now that you're here."
He responded with a giggle. "Your ancestors would be delighted to hear that, wouldn't they? This is enough—if it's not, I'll just have you grab more for me in the future."
In a worst-case scenario, he would just have to do more jobs for the clan.
However, when he turned, he saw Lexie staring at him with a baffled look. After a moment, she gave up and just waved it off, letting him be.
As they stepped out of the ancestral tomb, she glanced around and suddenly asked, "You got all your stuff with you?"
Mike nodded after checking his backpack, only to hear her urge, "Good. Since it's still light out, we should head straight back to Seastone now."
"What's the hurry? I ought to at least say thanks to Uncle Dalton. You know, for letting me take the—"
"No need. We're leaving now. Just… trust me," Lexie said, grabbing his arm and power-walking toward the village entrance.
By the time they reached it, Mike noticed the same SUV that had brought them here was still parked by the roadside. Lexie walked right up, fingers moving as she muttered something under her breath.
Then, she waved her hand. A little cotton doll crawled out from under the car, clutching the car key in its arms.
"Oh," he replied noncommittally.
The car rolled smoothly down the road for a while in silence. Then, out of nowhere, Mike glanced over and asked softly, "Lexie… Did you…"
Lexie turned her head at him, eyebrow raised. "What?"
His hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. He shot her a glance, then looked straight ahead again. After a moment, he just mumbled, "Forget it. Never mind."
Even though they had put some serious distance between themselves and the people back in the village—and the sound of the car masked most of it—Mike actually had pretty sharp hearing.
So… He did catch a few fragments of what was being yelled behind them.
Considering Lexie didn't want to say anything, he wasn't about to confront her and simply played dumb instead. After all, he had promised to do whatever she asked.
