A bone-deep chill crept up the Callaghans' spines, rising from the soles of their feet like icewater. They looked at their daughter's sweet, innocent face, only to find terror in her eyes.
Deep down, Vance knew he had wronged Marissa. As he stared into Caitlin's face, her features seemed ot blur and shift in his mind.
In a fleeting, horrifying moment, he saw her.
She had come to take revenge. Because he had cheated and pushed her into a divorce, she had now returned, as his child, to make him pay!
"Don't come any closer… Don't even come near me!" Vance stammered, backing away in panic. "I-I only made the same mistake all men make! I didn't mean for you to die; I just wanted a divorce!
"Why won't you let me go?"
He was getting hysterical, and Laura wasn't doing much better.
Caitlin was her only daughter, the one she had cherished despite all the strange, terrifying things she had done. She had loved her fiercely.
But now that the truth was out, how could they, with a clear conscience, love the reincarnation of the woman they had betrayed?
It all made sense now—the painful pregnancy, the difficult birth that nearly killed…
"Mommy? Daddy?"
As Caitlin looked at Vance and Laura, her face was no longer as solemn as before. Instead, it was graced with a newfound confusion, almost childlike and innocent.
Hearing her soft voice again, the couple completely broke down. Neither of them could bring themselves to look at her, as the fear and guilt were too overwhelming.
Shannon stepped in, further explaining the situation, "You don't have to worry. At her core, she is still your daughter. The fact that she reincarnated means she no longer holds the memories of her past life.
"Everything she's done came from the residual of her lingering attachment; it was never deliberate."
She paused, then continued, "That kind of lingering attachment is always strongest in the first year of reincarnation. As she grows older and forms her own thoughts and identity, those remnants of the past will gradually fade.
"But because you misinterpreted her behavior, suspected possession, mental illness, and tried to control her with increasingly harsh measures, the old lady had no choice but to intervene, despite risking alerting the authorities in the underworld."
What Shannon left unsaid was that, though lingering attachments from a past life would eventually fade, her emotional needs would grow as she did.
"Forget the adults for a second. What about the kid? What happens to her now? Her parents might grow distant, or worse, send her away entirely out of fear. Is that really fair to the kid?"
This comment, posted in the real-time chat outside the main livestream window, shot to the top within seconds.
Although Shanon had her loyal fans fiercely defending her actions, others voiced their support for the concern.
As a half-host, Eddie had been keeping an eye on the livestream chat throughout. When he saw the rising tide of concern, he brought it up without delay.
The cast members on-site all instinctively turned to glance at Vance and Laura, and what they saw only deepened the worry.
Seeing a flicker of something strange behind their eyes, perhaps fear or a silent pulling away, they knew the online concern wasn't unfounded.
The couple might be in pain after finding out the truth, but they might also distance themselves from Caitlin and send her away.
The cast members collectively turned to Shannon, hoping to find a way to protect the child's future.
At that, Shannon calmly said…
