Heartstrings on Fire novel Chapter 1244

Agnes stood outside, her eyes following Jared until his silhouette vanished into the distance. Only then did she finally turn to leave.

Earlier, Nate had called her, saying he'd picked up some intel on Phenix, but there was a catch—it wasn't good news. He wanted Agnes to weigh in on what to do next.

Nate hadn't been too clear on the specifics, to be honest. But Agnes knew that Nate had tracked down Phenix and Kearney right after they disappeared about a week ago.

Back then, they'd been living in a vineyard in Napa Valley. Reggie had set it up as a honeymoon retreat for Phenix and Sean. Phenix had plans to spend her life there, amidst the rolling hills and vine-covered landscapes.

Knowing where they were was one thing, but nobody had bothered to disturb them. Yet, Nate had kept tabs on them all along. Reggie had mentioned that if they stayed put, they'd just let them be, let Phenix live in her dream, undisturbed.

But if Nate was reaching out to Agnes now, it meant something had gone awry.

Nate lived conveniently close to the airport, just a ten-minute cab ride away for Agnes. He had the top floor of a high-rise, and Agnes made her way up without delay.

She rang the doorbell, and the door swung open almost instantly. Nate stood there in his pajamas.

"Agnes," Nate greeted her, using her given name rather than the nickname "Seven" that only a few close friends used.

Agnes wasted no time beating around the bush. "What happened? You wouldn't have called me over unless it was something big."

"It was normal until recently," Nate said, "but she just made a huge transfer. It was heavily protected, so I had to dig deep to trace it. Turns out, she wired the money to a mercenary outfit in the States—the same one our brother used to be with."

Agnes's heart skipped a beat. How could that be possible?

Nate added, "There are other anomalies, too. Like a joint fund your brother set up with Phenix. It's been accessed recently, but it requires both their consents. I checked the bank records and they show her signature alongside his, though he couldn’t have been there."

Agnes suddenly felt a cold realization wash over her. It was like a light bulb flickered on in her head, only to be doused by a bucket of ice.

She turned to meet Nate's gaze. His expression remained calm as he said, "So, if Phenix accessed that fund, it means she knows our brother's true identity. She's not confusing the two brothers anymore, or perhaps she's finally come to her senses."
