Heartstrings on Fire novel Chapter 1239

Jared nodded.

Agnes had been feeling a bit uneasy these past few days.

She had Nate look into Bain’s past records.

Nothing surfaced linking him to Tim Whitfield.

But that was to be expected, really.

Bain had been at The Rusty Anchor for so many years. If he had any skeletons in his closet, they’d have been buried long ago.

Agnes thought to herself, let it go. Even if Bain and Tim were connected, what would that prove now? It’s all in the past.

Recently, Naylor mentioned that the godfather was planning to disband The Rusty Anchor for good. The eldest brother was gone, the second brother and Phenix were missing, Nate had autism, and Naylor wasn’t leadership material.

Moreover, back at Phenix’s wedding, many of the godfather’s lieutenants and brothers were either killed or wounded.

The godfather had long since lost interest in leading The Rusty Anchor, announcing his retirement from the life.

Agnes thought it was for the best. A lifetime of skirting the law, living on the edge, had made them notorious but also made countless enemies. Peaceful nights were rare.

After the godfather disbanded The Rusty Anchor and settled all affairs, Agnes wanted him to come live with them.

Agnes had mentioned it to Jared a few times, and he hadn’t opposed the idea.

Jared’s memories of his father were hazy at best. But Agnes knew he cared deep down. They were father and son, after all, and they needed time to bridge the gap and heal old wounds.

Agnes hoped that one day, they’d both find peace.

A couple of days later, Agnes got a call from Alyssa.

This brought quite a crowd. The young maids, unable to enter the sterile room without proper gear, assumed from Alyssa’s reaction that Ryder had passed away and hurried to inform Cilian Thomas.

Cilian was in the middle of a shareholders’ meeting at the company when he got the call. He nearly fainted but rushed home as fast as he could.

Once back, he found his beloved son awake, and he joined Alyssa in a tearful embrace.

No one in the family had ever seen Mr. Thomas cry like a child.

It was only when Ryder spoke again, saying, “It’s too loud, stop crying,” that they finally calmed down.

The atmosphere at the Thomas household, usually somber and tense, felt lighter that day. Despite the staff’s large presence, conversations were often kept to a whisper.

The maid who mistakenly reported the news had been on edge. But instead of being fired, Cilian rewarded all the household staff with bonuses, even gifting each a small apartment.
