Agnes was utterly bewildered, "How does your drama with him have anything to do with me?"
Jenny spoke with a hint of pride, "Because you're still his Achilles' heel. Bullying you is the only way to get to him. Look, I barely had to push, and he agreed to let me see our son. I called just to thank you, in a way."
So that was it.
But knowing the truth only made Agnes feel worse.
Agnes countered, "Weren't you the one scared of any connection between Elton and me? Now you're dragging me into your mess. How does this serve you? I hope, in the future, you leave me out of whatever issues you two have, okay?"
Jenny sighed, "I had no choice. But don't worry, the past is the past for me. As long as I can marry Elton, we can still be friends."
Friends?
That was a stretch too far for Agnes.
Without another word, Agnes hung up the phone.
Sure enough, the news from the network exec soon followed.
The Primary Perspective was to remain in its prime time slot, with double the resources.
Yet, Agnes felt no joy.
It seemed her efforts were meaningless. No matter how hard she worked, control was always in someone else's hands.
To blacklist or to disrupt, at their whim.
Once could happen again, courtesy of Jenny.
"Have you ever been betrayed by a friend?"
Ben poured Agnes a beer, "Is Jenny stirring up trouble since she's back?"
Ben and Agnes had been through a lot together, especially in the news world.
So, he was well aware of the saga between Agnes and Jenny.
After a swig of beer, Agnes managed a smile, "You might find it hard to believe, but she was my best friend for nearly seven years. In the end, she betrayed me, stole my childhood sweetheart. That aside, she went out of her way to set me up. Though it's all in the past, I just can't fathom why she'd hate me so."
Ben shared, "Let me tell you a story from my childhood. I had a neighbor named Randy. He came from a troubled, low-income single-parent household. His mom was barely there for him mentally, so he pretty much survived on the kindness of our community. My mom would often send food their way, even covered his school fees. He was always respectful and ambitious. He made it to college on scholarships, then started from scratch in e-commerce. In a few years, he turned his company public, becoming a household name."
Agnes thought she caught on, "You're not talking about Randy Clarke, are you?"
