Heartstrings on Fire novel Chapter 1046

Hearing Agnes' words, Reggie seemed to find some solace. But in a blink, his eyes betrayed a hint of sorrow.

After a moment of silence, Reggie spoke, "Agnes, the person I've loved the most and the one I owe the most apology to is your mother. That's why, when I found out you were her daughter, I wanted to make things right. I've treated you as my own daughter, wishing nothing but peace and happiness for you. There are things I'd rather not tell you, but now that you know, you must heed my advice and steer clear of this matter."

"Reggie, I appreciate you treating me like your own, but what about Jared?"

Reggie's brow furrowed, his expression gradually turning grave.

"The truth is, I know far more than I let on, Reggie. Jared is Alyssa's son, your biological son. You must know that. You care so much for Nocturne because he is your grandson."

Reggie turned away, "Agnes, stop."

But Agnes was persistent, "Jared is right outside, don't you want to have a proper conversation with him?"

Reggie's voice turned colder by the second, "Agnes, enough. Alyssa and I have nothing between us, and even less so with him."

His tone was ice-cold and final.

Yet, Agnes felt a complex swirl of emotions within.

"Reggie, why can you consider me your own daughter but refuse to acknowledge Jared? He's your biological son."

"Agnes, I'll say it once more, I have no son. He means nothing to me."

Disappointment sank deep into Agnes' heart.

No, it was more than disappointment.

Jared had once said all he wanted was to ask Reggie one question.

Knowing of his existence, why hadn't he ever come to see him?

Now, it seemed they had their answer.

As cold and heartbreaking as it was.

At least Agnes knew this before Jared did.

She was thankful, thankful Jared hadn't asked before.

Leaving the airport, they headed straight for Maplewood Manor.

They slept till the sun was high in the sky, finally waking up slowly.

Everything that happened the day before felt like a dream.

As Agnes tried to get up, Jared wrapped his arms around her tightly.

"Jared, I need to go to work."

"I've called in sick for you for the morning," he replied.

How could he be so domineering, wanting her to laze around in bed with him?

But in the end, Agnes relented.

Burying her face in Jared's chest, she asked, "What are you planning to do next? Surely you don't intend to keep being my assistant."
