Heartstrings on Fire novel Chapter 1044

Reggie said, "Do you really think a brute like Patton could set up a major drug ring, establish such a tight-knit network, and keep it under wraps this long without someone higher up pulling the strings?"

Kearney, standing off to the side, remained stoic. "Reggie, if I had a hand in this, I'd throw myself into the Alligator Swamp. Please, just make sure you get to the bottom of this and clear my name."

Reggie frowned deeply. "If not you, then who? The boss? Patton seems like he's one of the boss's guys."

At that, Phenix's expression shifted dramatically. He quickly interjected, "No way it's Sean. Sean's been serving in the military all these years. How could he possibly be involved in something like this? Reggie, you can suspect anyone, but Sean is off-limits."

Reggie's tone grew heavier. "Pass on my message. I want him back here. And as for your wedding, I think it's best we postpone it."

Phenix's face fell at Reggie's words. Agnes watched the drama unfold from the sidelines, her curiosity piqued. It seemed Reggie was truly in the dark about this.

But now, even Reggie harbored doubts about their own kin. Could they really be innocent in this drug trafficking case?

After a moment, Reggie commanded, "Everyone, out."

As the three turned to leave, Reggie called out, "Septima, wait. Stay back. I need a word."

Agnes stayed as Phenix and Kearney exited the study, passing Jared, who stood by the door. They barely glanced at him before leaving.

Agnes fell silent, troubled. How had Reggie found out so quickly? Was he so well-informed and in control of everything?

Reluctantly, Agnes breached the subject. "Reggie, does this have something to do with you?"

Reggie's response was sharp. "I, Reggie, would never engage in such vile activities."

Agnes breathed a sigh of relief. Reggie went on, "This situation is more complex than I thought. Someone's been using Albert's Arms as a front for their dirty business, and I won't stand for it. But getting involved with drugs is too dangerous. Whether there's a traitor in our ranks or someone's setting us up, you'd best stay away. I'm just worried about your safety."
