Joel was flustered and indifferent. He sat in the garden for the whole afternoon. I sat with him for half an hour and told him some interesting things. In the end, I could only amuse myself.
Before I left, I said, "I'll drive you to the airport the day after tomorrow."
Joel expressed his gratitude, "Thank you for your understanding, Em."
I stayed at home until the evening when Laurelie called me. I picked it up. "Yeah?"
"Bob said he's gonna treat us to a few rounds, you coming?"
I turned my head and looked at Anthony. He was still playing chess with my grandfather. I hung up the phone and said to Anthony, "Anthony, why don't you stay here tonight and I'll pick you up tomorrow?"
Anthony looked up and said, "Okay."
I went to the bar in the sports car Joel bought for me. It was a light orange Lamborghini. When I arrived at the bar, Bob's eyes lit up as he said, "Jesus, Emma, do you know there are only five of these on earth? I wanted buy one, but Zack won't let me."
I threw the car key into his arms and said with amusement, "Don't think that I don't know what you're thinking. I'll lend you the car after you send me home."
Following that, I asked again, "Where's Laurelie?"
"Wasted already."
Bob put a hand over my shoulder and walked into the bar. In a lazy tone, he said, "I'm the only one willing to come to the door to get you."
When we entered the bar, we saw Laurelie. She was lying on the sofa in a daze, but the floor and the table were covered in her vomit. We then changed to another table.
As soon as we sat down, I heard a harsh voice. "Benjamin, the one who ruined your life is here."
I raised my head to look at Victoria. She had a smile on her face that only belonged to the winners. This smile was different from the disgust of the past. It was a smile that meant she truly looked down on me, as if I was a defeated soldier.
Standing next to her was Benjamin, with a white sweater inside and a coat that stretched to his knees. The extreme red and white contrast made Benjamin extremely charming. His hair was combed back to reveal his forehead, but his eyes looked deep. His whole body made me feel both familiar and strange, with an ineffable charm.
That was the Benjamin I met after being betrayed by Steve. The aloof, arrogant, and unworldly man who came to my rescue.
I finally lost him again.
After a month, I still remembered that Benjamin who pretended that nothing had happened after his company closed. He said twice that day, "I love you, Em." Now when I thought about it, I could finally sense the despair in his words. He was bidding his farewell to me.
Victoria asked again, "Shears, are you dumb?"
Victoria's attitude towards me changed greatly. I remembered the days when all she dared to do was treating me indifferently and never would word like this come out of her mouth. I frowned and said, "Victoria, beat it while you still can."
Benjamin had made up his mind to ignore me and let Victoria say whatever she wanted. Hence, there was no need for me to be nice to anyone.
"Heh, do you really think you're something?"
Hearing this, Bob's hands, which were supporting Laurelie, stopped. He then said to Laurelie, "Laurelie, that chick just said you are ugly as f*ck."
Laurelie instantly opened her eyes and asked, "Which one?"
Bob pointed at Victoria and said, "That chick over there. She was the one who said you were ugly and is now calling Emma names."
Victoria was shocked, "When did I call her names?"
"Victoria, huh?" Laurelie asked lightly. As soon as her voice sounded, Teresa and Janse also came over.
Teresa frowned and asked, "Why are you wasting your time with this crowd?"
"Wasting time?" Laurelie rested on Bob's body, her eyes bright as she stared at Teresa. In a soft voice, she said, "If you care so much about your precious time, why'd you waste dozens of yours on Zack?"
Teresa had nothing to do with the fighting between us, but Laurelie pointed her words directly at her. She darkened her face and said, "Laurelie, you'd better mind your own business, since you and I have no grudges against each other."
"No grudges?" With a belch from Laurelie, Bob sat a little farther away from her. She leaned on Bob's shoulder and asked, "Then what about Emma? What grudges does she have against you or you her? Was it only because Zack liked her that you framed her for the rest of her life? That's why you did all the disgusting things to harm her?"
Teresa said in a tight voice, "Shut up! Laurelie!"
"Shut up? No one tells me what to do around here! Or do you wanna have a peek at what lies six feet under?" Laurelie said, "Teresa, you know what, Zack is never gonna be with you, even if all the women in the world have died, he still wouldn't. 'Cause if he is, I'm personally digging up a fancy grave for you."
I sighed in my heart. Only someone like Laurelie could shut Teresa up and make her feel the most miserable.
But to be honest, Teresa really didn't say anything that could provoke Laurelie.
"Laurelie, what do you mean?"
"Are you a retard? I'll make you pay the price for what you've done to Emma. And don't you think about fighting back. Your little Heaney family has no way out of this."
After saying that, Laurelie hung up the phone. She smiled sarcastically and said, "Look, the man you like for nearly 20 years said that you are scheming. Teresa, you really are pathetic!" She had literally bombarded the s*it out of Teresa. Teresa's face was pale, but she was able to control it. Laurelie waved her hand and said, "Just... Just get out of my sight, will ya?"
"You might think that you can do whatever you wanna do, Laurelie. But there's a limit to it. Not everything will go according to the direction you've conceived, and not every single one in this world could be tramped under your feet, Laurelie," said Benjamin, looking at us with a cold gaze. After a moment of silence, he continued, "You can do whatever you want, but now you are going to take over the Weier family, so there are still a lot of things that you have to learn from your father."
Laurelie didn't care and asked, "Learn what from him? How to keep my head down?"
"In the business world, there is no one who can do whatever he wants, and all companies are closely connected. No one, not even your family, can stand to benefit alone without being assisted by others. You father is and always will be a bigger man than you'll ever be."
Laurelie raised her eyebrows and said, "But it's also very easy to destroy a family with other families! Don't you think you are overconfident? Yeah, I'll admit that your family is as powerful as mine, as well as the Shears. But do you really think the whole Dunn family is already yours?"
I was about to be the new president of the Shears family in two months.
And Laurelie was taking over the Weier Group sooner or later.
The Dunn family was Benjamin's, naturally.
The presidents of the three families were all here, but except for Laurelie and Bob, no one knew that I really was a Shears.
The Channings' business was all in other countries, so they were not as powerful as the other families in City B. However, as compared to the Heaney family and Solanges, the Channing Group was an outstanding company in City B.
Benjamin hooked his lips and said, "That is something you shouldn't bother yourself with. The Dunn family is and can only be mine."
Benjamin controlled the Dunn family, but he had deliberately made his grandfather drive him away from the Dunn family. What he had done in the past was to plot against me and made me pity him from the bottom of my heart.
Joel was right. Benjamin had hurt me many times and framed me for so many things, but I just did it once to him.
Benjamin did not seem to want to waste any more time on us. He turned around and left. He did not even glance at me. He left as if the quarrel that had just burst out between us never happened..
"Well, that's good," I thought.
After getting wasted, we split up. Bob drove Laurelie back home in my car. I walked to the riverside, and I was completely sobered up by the cool breeze. I sat by the river for a long time to enjoy the wind until I saw a person standing in the darkness about sixty feet away. The person stared at me under the dim streetlights, his eyes calm as a serene lake.
I smiled and looked at him calmly.
Benjamin had always been so handsome sometimes I wondered if he was a god descended from the Olympus.
He was always so cold and calm. There was no way to irritate such a cold man, just like it's impossible to melt an iceberg with a box of matches.
