"Who's goona be here?" Sean paused and said, "Benjamin, Ellis and, Connor."
Sean just excluded the people I didn't want to see.
I asked with a smile, "What about the sisters of the Heaney family?"
"I'm not stupid. I didn't invite them," Sean said, quite satisfied with his little deed.
I said, "Well, see you in the evening."
"Anthony, I have a six-year-old son, Ellis. I'll take you to see him tonight. I think Ellis will like you very much."
Anthony said, "No one likes me except you."
I was taken aback by his words. Looking at the boy with his head slightly lowered, I gently said, "Believe me, there will be a lot of people who like you."
Anthony was silent, with no emotion on his face.
In the afternoon, I took Anthony to buy clothes in the mall, and then went to a private custom- made jewelry store to buy three bracelets.
Each bracelet was carved with characters. I put the bracelet with the word "Khan" on Anthony's wrist.
Then I gave the one belonging to Emy to Anthony and said, "Keep her for my sister. When she grows up, you can give her."
Emy's wrist was still too thin to wear this.
Anthony took it and put it in his pocket. Then I took out the bank card and paid for it.
The three luxury bracelets cost a total of 430,000 bucks.
It might be a bit too expensive, but I knew these three bracelets would be the symbol of love among the three of them.
They would be the best friends and siblings.
In the evening, Sean called and asked, "Where are you?"
I looked at Anthony, who was having lunch and said, "Teresa has a restaurant downtown. I'm here."
"What?" Sean was puzzled, and then said, "Wait for me, I'll come to you with Connor and Ben."
After hanging up, I looked out of the window at the dark night. The night sky in City B was very hazy. It was not dark because of the city lights, but somewhat lonely.
Anthony suddenly said, "Don't feel bad, everything will be fine."
I looked at him in shock and asked, "How do you know I'm feeling bad? Anthony, you always say something that's hard for me to understand."
"Sometimes sadness is not expressed by words. I have been where you are right now." Anthony took a sip of his water and said in a calm tone, "Everything will be fine in the end, if it's not, it's not the end."
"Anthony, you're still a child." I emphasized, "You're only eleven years old. You shouldn't be so sensible and rational."
There was a faint trace of vicissitude in Anthony's eyes as he said in a cold tone, "Perhaps... I'm very smart. I've always been able to understand what the adults were talking about and the sarcasm and blaming hidden in their words. I tried my best to suck up my parents but still got tossed out. I knew it was coming all along but it didn't change the fact that I felt miserable. A dog could read its master's expression and behave accordingly, I did that but I was still... Me being sensible, smart, and silent was nothing but a bad omen in their eyes."
I got up and sat down beside him to take him into my arms. I stroked his head with my palm and said softly, "Anthony, I will be with you and do my best to be good to you."
"My parents said the most vicious words parents could ever say to their children with the mouths that they were supposed to express their love for me. Do you know what did I use to fear the most? Dinner time. That's the time when they'd threaten to throw me out. Funny thing is, I outlived them on that."
How could there be such vicious parents in the world?
As if knowing what I was thinking, Anthony said, "There are really such vicious parents in the world. Think about it carefully. Have you ever experienced something like that... I cursed them for having mental illnesses. I curse them for dying a horrible death, all of which I prayed for came true, but I didn't feel a thing for them. Aunt, I will be only good to you and Emy. I will protect you."
Anthony reminded me of Julienne. She did the same to me what Anthony's parents did to him.
But could did Anthony know?
I was stunned. "Don't be surprised," said Anthony placidly in my arms.
I pursed my lips and released him. In my heart, I suddenly understood why Anthony was abandoned by his parents. He was indeed different from ordinary people.
But I couldn't tell what it was. Looking at his calm and cold eyes, I felt uncomfortable, and I felt sorry for the child in front of me.
I pinched his cheek and said, "Anthony, Emy is still gonna stay in Ireland for a long time."
Anthony was confused. "Why?"
I explained in a tone that was as calm as possible, "Emy's father didn't want her, so I don't want to bring her back her."
I wanted to make Benjamin regret.
Another reason was that I was still no match for Benjamin. If I brought Emy back, he would take her away from me.
After sitting with Anthony for a while, I saw Janse and Teresa.
Teresa was stunned to see me and asked, "What are you doing here?"
I glanced at her and thought that Sean and the others should be coming soon.
Upon hearing this, Benjamin asked calmly, "What do you mean?"
I was silent. Janse glanced at Teresa and then took her away. Feeling embarrassed, Sean hurriedly said, "You guys must be starving, jeez, at least I am. Come on, sit down. Waiter, get the order, please!"
Benjamin sat down silently. Connor said with a smile, "If my memory serves me right, we met once in the hospital, Em."
We did. And back then, the situation was quite different from now.
I nodded and said, "Yeah, right. Long time no see."
Ellis suddenly asked happily, "Mom, where are the gifts?"
Upon hearing this, Sean asked eagerly, "Do I have a gift?"
I glanced at him, then handed a bag to Ellis and said softly, "Mommy chose a pair of shoes for you. By the way, I have another small gift for you."
I took out the bracelet from my handbag and put it on for Ellis and said, "This is a gift for the New Year. There's a password lock on it that makes sure no one but you can take it off."
I thought for a moment and said, "I might as well do it myself. You might lose it."
"I like it very much." When I was setting the password for Ellis, he looked down at Anthony's wrist and asked, "Mom, why does he also have one?"
"Anthony is your brother," I explained.
I turned my head and looked at Anthony sitting in silence. I rubbed his head and said with a smile, "Anthony will have whatever you have."
Ellis was silent. He was obviously downcast.
I suddenly realized that he was not happy about the sudden appearance of another boy with me.
I looked at Benjamin, who looked at me with his deep eyes as if he was amused by the situation and wanted to see what I would do.
I pinched Ellis's face and explained, "Ellis, Anthony is a good brother. He'll help you get back at whoever dares to bully you. He'll also help you with your homework and read you stories before bedtime."
I was even embarrassed by how lame I was with children.
Ellis asked in a depressed tone, "Will he live with you?"
I was stunned and said, "Yes, he will."
"Then why can't I live with you?" Ellis asked dejectedly.
