Benjamin's hand paused for a moment before he asked, "What is there to see?"
I said, "I just want to have a look. I don't mean anything else. Don't think too much."
Benjamin tilted his head and looked at me. I also looked back at him magnanimously. I was silent for a long time and he finally lost.
He said, "Then I'll go with you."
I shook my head and said, "Your company must be very busy under the current situation. I'll ask Bob to go with me."
He was going to take over the position of chairman of the Dunn family. Recently, he has been buried in work. He urged, "Well, remember to come home tomorrow night."
This was my apartment. I would definitely come home!
I was never someone good at keeping secrets, and I wouldn't leave silently. After I return to City B from City W, I would ask Benjamin frankly and get the answer and end whatever we had in a peaceful way.
Early in the morning, I called Bob. He didn't want to go with me, but when he heard that Laurelie was there, he happily booked a ticket for me.
It was still early when we reached City W. I called Laurelie and half an hour later Lawrence came to pick us up.
Lawrence wore the same military uniform as I saw him for the first time and stopped the car as he took off the sunglasses. He looked at me and said with a hint of a smile in her cold eyes, "Cherry is grounded in the hospital. She asked me to pick you up."
"Mm," Bob replied and asked, "How's her condition?"
Lawrence said in a low voice, "She won't die."
Her tone was too cold. Bob was stunned for a moment before replying nonchalantly, "It was actually our uncle's fault to let her out of the rein. She could've died."
Bob sighed. "This how she is."
He didn't say a word. When we arrived at the military hospital, Laurelie was transcribing in front of the writing desk with a Bible in her hand and a pen.
When she saw me, she laughed and then complained bitterly, "This is my dad's order. Four hours a day."
When Lawrence came to her side, he flicked her head and said, "If mom knows that your writing is this ugly, she's gonna die of anger. Your handwriting really looks like turtles crawling on the paper."
I looked down and found that her writing was indeed a little too bad... it was just like what Lawrence said, a turtle crawling on the paper.
Laurelie dropped her pen and said with her lips pursed, "Do you wanna do this for me then since your writing is so good?"
With a cold sneer, Lawrence left.
Watching his back as he left, Laurelie said indifferently, "He doesn't have to be with his unit so he comes here to find fault with me every single day."
"He's worried about you." I laughed.
It was only then that I asked, "How's your injury?"
"I'm basically totally recovered. It's been a week already."
Bob, however, asked with a sullen face, "How did you get hurt in the first place?"
"It's just a minor injury during a task," replied Roc Laurelie indifferently.
For Laurelie, such an injury wouldn't bother her at all. But it was not the same for Bob.
What's more, there was nothing he could do about it.
Also, he didn't know who he really was to Laurelie and he didn't know how to talk to her.
Sometimes, when he wanted to care about her, he would find that he did not have the right. He didn't even have the courage to tell her to take care of herself.
After all, he was not his boyfriend, not even his friend.
He had no right to say what he wanted to say the most.
So after Laurelie's indifferent explanation, Bob fell silent, and he did not say anything else.
Somehow, I felt a little embarrassed. Just then, my phone rang. I took out my phone and saw Sean's number.
With a hint of doubt in my voice, I went out and asked, "What?"
"You are in City W?"
This plain tone made me couldn't help but tremble. I suppressed the surging emotion in my heart and asked, "How do you know?"
"Who else do you think would know other than you?"
Who else? The only one left was Benjamin.
Did he even tell her all this?
Amused, I asked, "What's wrong? Is there anything I can help you with?"
I might have lost the war but I could not lose this battle.
Teresa said faintly, "Wait for me for two hours. I'll be at the cliff where you jumped into the sea. There are some things that I need to talk to you about. Don't worry, I promise I won't harm you."
I kept silent and forced myself to calm down.
Teresa was silent for a while before she asked, "Do you dare?"
I was about to agree when I heard an irascible voice inside saying, "Teresa, what are you doing with my phone?"
Hanging up the phone, I felt confused.
Teresa whispered, "I fell in love with that young boy who was isolated from this world
when I myself was even still a teenage girl. I tried everything I could to cheer him up and stayed by his side the moment I realized that I loved him. But it was all useless. He is still as isolated and indifferent as ever. He is still just Zack Channing."
Teresa said in a tone that sounded she was about to cry, "He is too lonely. There are no other colors in his eyes. He is so different from Benjamin. When he was young, Benjamin was as passionate and rebellious as fire. He had everything a teenage boy would have, friends, brothers. But Zack didn't. Sometimes I would look into the mirror and ask myself if I was dreaming, if Zack was nothing but my imagination, a person that only existed in my illusion."
I suddenly understood that Teresa loved Zack exactly for his isolation and indifference. And the reason was that she wanted to melt all of that down herself.
It was just that she had overestimated herself and underestimated Zack.
The sea breeze was getting colder and colder, making me tremble slightly. I thought for a moment and said, "Zack never thought he was lonely. He is just a closed book and he liked being that way. You are the one who scared him by trying to pry him open."
Perhaps Teresa's enthusiasm confused him and made him ostracize her.
I paused and said, "He knows what he wants, and what he wants is not you. That's why you've been waiting for twenty years but still haven't got anything."
"Shut up!" Teresa stared at me and said fiercely, "He is like a god up in the Olympus! And you are that vicious serpent that dragged him down! He even jumped into the sea with you!"
"I am Zack's first love and first love changes a man in many ways. But you can rest assured that the woman that finally gets to be with Zack won't be me. And it wouldn't be you either."
Teresa glared at me. "Who is it then?"
A beautiful and understanding woman.
A woman who could understand and really love Zack.
In an instant, I thought of Laurelie.
Laurelie who chased after glory and her dreams.
Seeing that I did not speak, Teresa's eyes turned cold as she asked, "Do you know why Ben would stay by your side? Do you know how important I am to Ben? Do you really think that you have control over him?"
Being questioned by her made me feel like I was about to suffocate, but I still said calmly, "Do you think I am a fool? Do you really think why Benjamin is with me and that I don't know the divorce papers have already been authorized? And that he's about to be the chairman of the Dunn Group?"
Teresa froze for a moment, then I said with a smile, "You've always thought that you played me around, but you don't know that I've already known the truth."
I paused before continuing, "Fate is really a strange thing. You love Zack, but Zack loves me. I love Benjamin, but no one... gets what they really want."
Teresa was silent for a long time before she said with a smile, "Emma, five years ago, Benjamin chose me, and Zack chose you. What do you think will they choose now?"
I was shocked. "What do you mean?"
Teresa looked at the bottom of the cliff. Following her line of sight, I saw the roaring blue sea below. I suddenly remembered the moment of despair five years ago and I couldn't help but feel fear in my heart.
I dared not to experience the nightmare five years ago again. I looked at Teresa with fear and asked, "What are you doing?"
I took a step back. Teresa grabbed my wrist and said with a smile, "Don't move, or I'll immediately pull you down. Tsk, you have a child in your belly. You certainly don't want anything to happen to it. If you want it to live, you'll do whatever I say!"
