September said solemnly, "I have something to tell you."
I was stunned and asked, "What is it?"
"You told me about Benjamin, and also told me the reason why he didn't go back to the Dunn family." September paused and said, "But Emma, there was news from the Jenkins family, which said that Benjamin's own company and the Dunn family's company had been merged. After a while, he will be the chairman of the Dunn family Group and become the new heir of the Dunn family."
I was stunned and even more at a loss.
After hanging up, I began to panic. I looked up and saw that the night had fallen outside the window. The sheer contrast between the night and the bright moonlight formed a gap, which made me feel depressed.
I was restless and disconsolate. It was not until Benjamin opened the door of the bedroom that I forced myself to calm down because I did not want to show any sign of panic in front of him.
I tilted my head to look at him, and Benjamin took a deep look at me. Then, with a smile on his lips, he said, "It's time for dinner."
I said, "I'm not hungry."
I couldn't eat anything in my mood now.
He persuaded me. "Eat as much as you can, it's good for the child."
I ignored him. Benjamin hugged me from behind with his arms tightly around me. He said in a low voice, "I know you are blaming me from the bottom of your heart, but your body and the child in your body are not to be joked with."
"Do you love the child very much?" I asked.
"Of course, that's my daughter." Benjamin laughed in a low voice. "I'm looking forward to seeing her coming in six months."
Looking at the bright lights in City B, I put my hand on his arm and said with a smile, "I love you, Ben."
I loved Benjamin, very much so.
So much so that I'd make any compromise that needed to be made.
I craved his warmth, so I didn't dare to confront him.
That night, I listened to him and had dinner, enjoying his massage even more.
His fingertips were full of magic, burning my heart.
When I woke up in the morning, Benjamin had already left. I reached out and touched the cold bed beside me. I got up and went to the bathroom to wash up. Then I took a taxi to my own new company.
The renovation workers were busy. I waited for twenty minutes and took a taxi to leave for Ben's company.
At the door, I happened to meet Sean. He said apologetically, "I'm really sorry for what happened yesterday. You know that I'm just a nobody to his mother, so I didn't dare to speak up to protect you."
They were all his family and friends. He did not take a stand to speak for me, so I had no reason to blame him.
Besides, he didn't do anything wrong.
Why should I blame him?
I said nonchalantly, "Don't think too much. It's a good thing that you didn't help me yesterday. Otherwise, Janse would blame you instead."
Sean scratched his head and said, "I'll see you to the elevator."
"Why?" I asked curiously.
"September is in the hospital. I want to go to be with her." Sean paused and reminded me, "Teresa is in his office. You go to the next room and wait for a while. I'll ask the secretary to make you a cup of coffee."
I smiled and said, "Don't worry about it. Go ahead."
Sean said alright and left. Looking at his hurried steps, I sighed a little. Benjamin said that he was the most fickle person, but who knew that the fickle person would be more addicted to love than anyone else once he was serious.
I took the elevator to the 27th floor. Remembering what September said last night, I hesitated for a while but still went to his office.
There was no sound inside for a long time. Suddenly, I heard the indifferent voice of Benjamin asking, "When will you leave?"
"I'm waiting for your answer."
This was Teresa's voice.
Very determined.
"What answer?"
"Ben, I just want to know..."
Teresa was silent for a while before she asked, "Do you remember how you were when you liked me? Have you lost all of your love for me?"
Benjamin indifferently asked, "What answer do you want?"
Teresa replied, "I want the truth."
Benjamin fell silent and there was no more sound.
I placed my hand on my breast. After a long while, I heard Teresa's voice saying, "You know, I'm stubborn enough to wait for the answer."
"Teresa, you've always known the answer to this question."
Benjamin's indifferent voice said, "You clearly knew that I loved you, but you had to drag in Zack to piss me off; You clearly knew that I wanted to marry you, but you had to marry a man who was useful to the Heaney family; You clearly knew that if something happened to you, I would only save you, but you had to let me make a choice between you and Emma."
All of a sudden, my heart was broken into pieces - I clearly heard the sound of them falling to the ground and breaking.
It made me feel desperate and even more ashamed.
Teresa asked, "So you love me now?"
Benjamin coldly asked, "What do you think?"
Teresa smiled and said, "I know you love me, otherwise, you wouldn't have gone back to Emma to keep her away from Zack. You wouldn't have gotten that divorce agreement just to make me happy."
Teresa chuckled and said, "The agreement has been approved, and then it's time for you to inherit the Dunn family. After that, you'll still need to keep her tied down."
She said in a crisp voice, "Before I get Zack, you will have to be there to help me. You can't walk away from this."
"Silly girl, Zack will be yours."
I asked, "Where's Bob?"
"Sean is dealing with the funeral arrangements with the elders of the Jenkins family."
I suddenly said, "Zack, Teresa loves you very much."
"I know. That's her business," he said coldly.
I fell silent all of a sudden, but the conversation between Teresa and Benjamin kept replaying in my mind.
Every word of the conversation was chipping away at my heart.
I never thought that I would experience betrayals again and again, and my heart would be torn apart again and again.
I had never thought that he would be willing to hurt me.
Zack kept silent for a while and then asked, "Have you been caught in the rain?"
I shook my head. "No."
My forehead was gently touched by his finger.
I turned my head and saw Zack tidying my hair. He frowned and said, "You are all wet."
"Maybe I got wet when I got off the car."
My explanation was too lame. Zack did not ask me more. Instead, he pushed away my drenched hair with his fingers, and then took out his handkerchief from his pocket to wipe it for me.
"Are you a boy scout? What kind of commissioner keeps a handkerchief by his side?" I teased.
He looked at me quietly, with his eyes full of emotions that I didn't understand. Then he sighed and said, "Em, you don't have to act tough. I know you are feeling sad."
Zack always... always knew me so well.
And he always understood me so well.
Zack wiped my hair and took back the handkerchief after it was dried. Then he looked at the end of the corridor. I also followed his line of sight.
Bob and Sean rushed over from the other side. Bob walked over and said, "The body has already been sent to the crematorium. It will be cremated soon."
"What? Already?" I asked in surprise.
"It was ordered by September. After being cremated, let's take some money to Rose's town and ask her to bury it."
September's father had always been protecting Rose when he was alive.
That was why she gave his ashes to Rose. There was nothing wrong with that.
Sean had been looking at the ward. I suggested, "Sean, do you have time? Can you drive me home now?"
When we got in the car, Sean asked, "He was there, right?"
