“What happened? Don’t tell me Patten’s in trouble again.”
Adolphus met Laurinda’s gaze and nodded. She just gave him that look, the one that said she’d seen this coming a mile away.
“I say we just cut them both off. Figure out a way to get them out of the Lane family. What did he do this time?”
Adolphus adjusted his hold, letting Laurinda settle against him more comfortably. “He tried to start a new company, using old connections from the Charles family and some of Odette’s secret savings. Nelly threw in a bunch of money too.”
“And then?” Laurinda pressed, barely hiding her impatience. She didn’t care about the details, just wanted to know how it ended.
“Well, the Charles family’s creditors came knocking. Felix found out, lost his temper, and told Patten to pay up out of his own pocket. They looked into everything and discovered Patten had been skimming cash from the company. So now, Felix has had Patten and Odette thrown in jail.”
Laurinda let out a long sigh. She should have felt a little satisfied, considering how much she disliked them. But standing where he was as the future head of the Lane family, there was nothing to celebrate.
“Does this mean you have to step in and fix everything?” she asked.
“Not yet. Dad’s already sold off Patten’s shares in Lane Group to patch up the mess from his embezzlement. The Carl family got hit too, thanks to everything with the Charleses. Earl’s reputation is shot, and now he has a whole pile of problems dumped in his lap.”
Laurinda rested her head on Adolphus’s shoulder. He gently lifted her chin, making her look at him. His voice turned serious. “Tell me something. If Earl comes to you for help, would you help him?”
Laurinda straightened up, facing those deep, dark eyes. An amused smile played on her lips. “Why would you think Earl would even ask me? I’m just a disgraced fake heiress, remember? My luck only turned the day I found you.”
