When Laurinda said she didn't want to get married, Adolphus got flustered. He pulled her hand away from his mouth, frustration all over his face. "Why not? Is marrying me such a bad idea, or do you just really not want to…"
Laurinda cut him off, "Hold on. Are we even talking about getting married right now? I thought this was about you being emotionally unavailable."
"That's exactly why I want to marry you," Adolphus shot back. "I want to prove I'm not that type of guy. So why won’t you marry me?"
He stared at her, genuinely confused and a little hurt. For him, marrying Laurinda felt like the most natural thing in the world.
She met his eyes. There was a seriousness there that almost made her second-guess herself. Ever since his accident, Adolphus had seemed different. Softer, more attached… maybe a bit clingy. Was it his head injury, or was it something else?
She couldn't help but look at him with a mix of annoyance and suspicion. Not that it made any difference to Adolphus. All he cared about was making sure she stayed his and his alone. No competition, no loopholes.
She narrowed her eyes, catching that intent in his gaze. Her voice dropped to a warning. "You need to cool it. What I actually want to know is why that woman keeps hanging around you. She's still watching you... Is this your mess? Did you lead her on or something?"
Adolphus looked genuinely baffled. "I swear, I don't know her. If you don't believe me, just ask Foley and Egan."
Foley and Egan, who had been minding their own business, turned around when they heard him mention their names. Both gave Laurinda an understanding nod.
"Laurinda, seriously, we've never seen her before," Foley assured her. "I doubt she's even from around here."
"Really? Because her face said otherwise," Laurinda muttered. She couldn't shake the feeling that woman somehow knew Adolphus.
"I'm not lying to you," Foley insisted, his tone a little too earnest. "Before he met you, there weren’t any other girls around Adolphus."
