Adolphus looked over at Laurinda, catching the hint of a teasing smile on her lips. Suddenly, he didn’t feel so pressed to get answers, though he couldn’t quite shake off that jealous ache in his chest.
“So? You’re not going to tell me who that guy was?” he asked, his voice just a little sharp.
Laurinda could hear the jealousy in his tone, and honestly, she enjoyed it more than she wanted to admit. The corners of her mouth curled higher until she finally let out a laugh.
“I thought you weren’t interested in explanations.” She leaned in, eyes sparkling. “Who do you think he is?”
He wasn’t expecting to be put on the spot like that, and it left Adolphus quiet for a second. Who did he think the guy was? He had to be a rival. Who else would get into a fight trying to defend Laurinda, unless he wanted to impress her? There was just no other reason someone would get so worked up.
Laurinda parked in the Nexus Square garage, picking a spot and turning off the ignition. She stretched out in her seat, slow and relaxed, unfastening her seatbelt. Her gaze drifted over to Adolphus, eyes half-closed as if she was curious how he’d handle this.
Adolphus caught her watching, and just raised his eyebrow, acting totally cool. In his mind, he’d already talked himself down from that jealous ledge. Whatever the other guy was doing, it wasn’t Laurinda’s problem, and she definitely wasn’t throwing punches for anyone else.
Unclipping his seatbelt, Adolphus glanced back at her with a little smirk. “Come on, let’s see what movies are playing.”
The sudden switch in topics almost made Laurinda laugh again. Her usual composure slipped, and she looked at him, genuinely a little confused.
“Wait, weren’t you just jealous and waiting for an explanation? Why aren’t you upset anymore?”
He grinned, easy and sincere. “I was just being a little dramatic before. It’s not like you told him to go start a fight. What he does isn’t up to you. Now, let’s go see a movie.”
Adolphus looked at her with that same warm smile, like nothing had even happened. Laurinda blinked. She hadn’t expected him to let it go so quickly, but honestly? She liked this side of him.
