“Of course not. We’re just here for a quick look around. If there’s nothing else, we’ll get going.”
Teddy didn’t bother to explain why he and Laurinda were there. He didn’t see the point. Even if Laurinda made it into Ladd’s lab, she probably wouldn’t run into those people much anyway. Sometimes it was just easier not to say too much.
The students, who clearly wanted some inside info, didn’t push it after hearing Teddy’s answer. They just said a quick goodbye and hurried off.
They all thought of themselves as top students, totally confident their skills were enough to get them into the lab. None of them seemed worried about competition.
Watching them walk off, Laurinda understood where their confidence came from. It was that certainty you get when you really know you’re good at something.
“They look like decent people,” Laurinda said as she squinted after the four of them. It was actually kind of rare to see university students with eyes that clear. They hadn’t been worn down by life yet.
Teddy nearly tripped as he heard her. He shot her a confused look. “Since when do you know how to read people’s faces?”
All at once, Laurinda didn’t really feel like talking to him anymore. It just hit her that the way Teddy saw things was nothing like how she did.
When she stayed silent, Teddy realized he’d asked something stupid. He rubbed his nose and laughed awkwardly. “Hey, I was just joking.”
“It wasn’t funny. Come on, let’s not keep the other candidates waiting.”
Laurinda headed off in the same direction as the other students, and Teddy caught up, launching into a rundown of the labs around them.
“They’re all from our research institute, right?” Laurinda asked next, looking where Teddy was pointing. It didn’t make sense to her that the labs looked so shabby when she funded them every year.
